When people look at me, they see the silver spoon I have shoved up my ass. But no one sees the sacrifices I’ve had to make to keep it.

I went more than a decade without seeing my own mother because my father insisted I would be spoiled by her influence. Felicia went from having a brother that protected her to a distant relative who sent checks in the mail every few weeks.

I thought I owed it to them to finish what I started.

But the side with people capable of murder is not the right side to be on.

I still have the ledger in my hands, even as seeing the same last names listed over and over again is starting to make my head hurt. “You going to give me some idea of what to expect next?”

“Every Initiation is different, wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise.” Brady chuckles like it’s a joke. The asshole is definitely enjoying lording over me that he knows something I don’t. “I know daddy has helped you with everything else, but he isn’t going to be much help this time.”

“Sorry, man. I can’t hear you over all that gloating you’re doing.”

Brady smirks. “Everybody wants the big party at the end, but you fucks still have to earn your place. Let the others know that you guys need to find a girl.”

The way he says it makes bile rise in the back of my throat. “A girl?”

“Preferably a scholarship student because they’re easy to buy off, but it doesn’t have to be. One of the girls who like to hang around our parties and doesn’t say no when she gets invited upstairs. You know the type. I’ll need all your suggestions within the next few days.”

“If you just need a warm body, why not just go down to the local strip joint and wave a wad a cash?”

Brady rolls his eyes. “The girl has to be a student at St. Bart’s.”

“Why?”

“Tradition. Do you want to ask me more questions or do you want to be Initiated?”

“Yeah, I got it.” I resist the urge to ask if he wants the chick bathed and brought to his room like something out of an adult-oriented adventure novel. “We’ll work on it.”

“Just find somebody who will keep their mouth shut when it’s all over, whatever that takes.”

“When what is all over?”

His smile is dark. “You’ll find out at the Initiation.”

A girl.

I guess that’s confirmation that the Initiation is always a sex thing. That shouldn’t surprise me, but the thought of it makes me more than a little sick to stomach. Nothing binds a bunch of guys like making them do something together that they want to stay a secret. We’ll have collateral on each other for the rest of our lives.

My mind whirls. I can guess which girl they chose last year.

And something tells me she didn’t keep her mouth shut.

I stare at the dressed-up dandy across from me, trying to imagine his hands stained with blood. Brady is a playboy and a bit of a sociopath, but it’s hard to imagine him beating someone nearly to death or ramming them with his car.

But I already know that evil hides in unlikely places.

Brady couldn’t have turned into an evil psychopath overnight. Havoc House did it to him. It’s going to keep happening until someone finally decides to put a stop to it.

Hundreds of names spill out of the pages in front of me. Former alumni who have more allegiance to Havoc House and their own selfish desires than basic human decency.

Vaughn is in the hospital because he brought the wrong girl to their attention.

Brady nods toward the door. I realize I’m being summarily dismissed. The ledger is still open in my hands, and something in it catches my eye as I move to shut the cover.

Three words that might just change everything.

I make like I’m about to close the book. “You forgot your glass.”
