“I don’t think that’s a good idea. I should go home.”

“I’ll be on my best behavior. Ain’t shit going to happen tonight that you don’t want to happen,” he maintained, but little did he know that was the problem.

Mack had a glowing track record in DuPont Falls. I wasn’t afraid of being alone with him; otherwise, I wouldn’t have let him into my home where my child was. I was scared of myself and getting attached to something I could never have.

“People will tell you anything, Skylar. Look them in the eyes, pay attention to the shit they’re not saying and trust your gut.” Mack stared into my eyes, giving me access to his soul. I saw everything I wanted and needed, and that scared me. Mack is a Meraux, and his last name came with different rules. “So, are you coming with me or not?”

“I’ve been at work all night. I smell like smoke and sweat.”

“I knew that when I asked Sky. Nothing’s going to happen unless you want it to.”

He was testing me. I couldn’t let him know I wanted him. I had to play it cool, “Sure.”

“You riding with me?”

“I can’t leave my car here.”

“You’re the boss tonight. You can if you want to,” he smiled, holding up his car keys.

Snatching them out of his hand, he led me to his car and opened the door for me to slip inside. He walked to the passenger seat with his phone to his ear, letting Prince know I was leaving my car.

“You’re going to have to bring me back in the morning.”

He smirked, and it wasn’t until he did that I realized what I had said. “I got you,” he replied.

Instead of trying to clean it up, I pressed the start button as my hand roamed the side of the seat so I could adjust it. He noticed me struggling and leaned across my body to assist while his cologne temporarily intoxicated me.

I wonder if he tastes as good as he smells.

“You good?”

“Yeah. Where am I going?” I asked, and he plugged his address into the GPS.

Pulling out of the parking lot, the drive was quiet. Usually, I basked in the silence because I didn’t get it often with a toddler at home. It was suffocating because all I could hear were my thoughts.

God, this man is so sexy without even trying.

Focus. You’re not fucking this man tonight.

Would that be so bad?

Yes! Yes, it would when you’re sitting at home smoking a cigarette to curb the need for more of him. He’s a Meraux, and you have a kid already. Please don’t do it to yourself, Skylar.

It’s no harm in a bit of fun, though.

Fun is how you ended up a single mother with a jackass for a baby daddy. Have you learned nothing?

“Are you hungry?” Mack’s voice cut into the back and forth I was having with my thoughts.

Yes! Hungry to be fucked, I thought as I clenched my thighs together to ignore my throbbing pussy. “No, I’m fine. Do you want me to stop?”

“Nah, I’m good,” he replied lazily, resting his elbow against the door.

Shortly after, I pulled into the quiet neighborhood that looked exactly like where a Meraux would reside. The grass was bright green and neatly manicured, even in the darkness. Pulling into the driveway, he tapped a button, and the garage door opened.

I parked his car, and he pressed the button, killing the engine. Mack unlocked the door, and I followed him inside his home. It was spacious, considering he lived alone and a far cry from my small two-bedroom apartment.

“Do I need to take my shoes off?” I asked, noticing how neat and in place everything was.
