I hadn’t figured out my next play with Sky yet. Rules were rules, but I wanted her. Fuck that. I needed her and Cam both. Until I figured out a way to make that a reality, I didn’t want to say too much, knowing how intrusive my family could be. The request was a lot less serious coming from Hailo, so when she volunteered, I let her.

“Do you have feelings for Skylar?”

“She’s cool.”

“Fine, I won’t pry, but I’m here if you need to talk.”

“I appreciate it. Thanks for babysitting.”

“Of course. I need to get to know my step-granddaughter at some point. She can be my little helper,” She casually stated as I headed out of the kitchen.

Instead of replying, I kept walking as if I didn’t hear her attempt to pry despite saying she wouldn’t. That was her way of supporting whatever decision I made, and while I appreciated the gesture, it wasn’t up to Mia either.

Walking into the basement, my father was seated on the sofa watching television. “Wassup, you needed to see me.”

“It’s nothing important. I haven’t seen you much, so I just wanted to check in to see how you’re adjusting.”

“It ain’t that much different in my world. I’m straight,” I replied, sitting adjacent to him.

“How are Gianni and Tyson?”

“Bored in retirement already, huh?”

“Never, but I’m concerned for my family. They seem to be at odds more than usual lately.”

Honestly, they were, and I didn’t see it getting better until it came to blows. Gi didn’t speak on it because he didn’t want it to seem like he was angry about Kyerra. I knew him well enough to know it was Tyson’s betrayal that cut deep. Tyson was too emotional to understand that, so apologizing wasn’t going to happen, and I was stuck with both of them.

“Yeah, I feel it, especially when you’re arguing with Uncle Lucas. What was that about?” I asked, making my move, but the old man caught it.

“Brother’s argue,” he replied with a sly smile.

“Just like Ty and Gi. They’ll work it out. They always do,” I replied, keeping it short. This time was a little different, but I was clinging to the hope that it would work out because I didn’t know what would happen if they didn’t.

“You put my wife on babysitting duty so you could have a date while I’m going alone.”

“I’m surprised you didn’t use that as an excuse not to go yourself.”

“As tempting as that sounds, it’s the first event after stepping down. We all have to show our support,” Everett informed me, and I nodded. Despite not being directly in charge anymore, they’d always be connected. “Tell me about this date of yours.”

“She has a kid,” There was much more to Skylar, but I shared the one detail that mattered to my family. My parents had no secrets, so they’d likely already had a conversation about it anyway.

“Macklen.”

“I know.”

“Then what are you doing, son?” he asked sympathetically, trying to understand why I would volunteer to walk into the lion’s den.

“I don’t know,” I replied because that was the truth. I knew it was a recipe for disaster, but the temporary relief of being around her was worth the risk. Now, I fully understood how Gianni felt with Hailo. She clouded his judgment in a way that nothing mattered but them. It was the same way I felt whenever I was around Sky. Nothing mattered, not even my last name.

“She’s probably a nice woman. I don’t doubt that, but this can’t happen. You need to walk away before it’s too late.”

“What if it already is?”

“The longer you prolong the inevitable, the more it will hurt. If you care about her, you’ll let her go before you get into more squabbles with her daughter’s father.” The problem with that is I didn’t think I could. Being with Skylar and Cam felt right. There were no coincidences, only purposes, and Skylar coming into my life had one.

I wasn’t surprised my father found out. There wasn’t anything you couldn’t find out being a Meraux. Marcus got what he deserved, and I’d check him again if the situation called for it.

“I gotta go. I’ll hit you later.”
