“You’re so cocky. I guess that’s why every woman in this city hates me.”

“Not that you give a fuck.” It was one of the things I loved about Hailo. She had many insecurities, but none involved other women, which felt like a breath of fresh air.

“You make me sound so mean.”

“You can be.”

“Really? Mean people don’t bring their husband lunch because he’s been in, meeting after meeting all morning.”

“Daniel’s ass will get fired if he keeps telling my business.” He was another person in my life that Hailo managed to win over. Daniel wouldn’t hesitate to call Hailo whenever he felt I wasn’t listening, as if I worked for him.

“You’re not going to fire Daniel.”

“Where’s my baby?”

“I’m surprised it took you this long to ask.” Hailo smiled, rummaging through her purse that could’ve doubled as a gym bag. “I had my check-up today, so she’s with your mom.”

“You called and asked her to keep her?”

“She’s a little too intrusive for my taste, but she loves Renni. I know she won’t let anything happen to her. Plus, I know you’re just getting back to work.”

“I would’ve come home if you needed me.”

“I know, which is why I called your mom.” She sat the card down and slid it closer for me to read as if I didn’t pick the message when I made the order.

Just so you remember who you’re dealing with. Have a good day Pretty Lady.

“What’s that?”

“A note that came with my flowers. I assumed they were from my husband, but maybe Chauncy tracked me down.” Hailo finally cracked a smile, and I did the same. “Where did you steal this line from?”

“My heart, asshole.”

“It was really sweet in your own Gianni kind of way,” she admitted as I turned my chair toward her.

I couldn’t resist the urge to touch her any longer as I stood up. Vulnerable Hailo turned me on. I positioned myself between her legs, a place I had missed so much. She leaned back to get a better view of my face.

“I think your glasses give you superpowers,” she grinned, rimming the edge of my frames. “You should wear them more often.”

“What kind of superpowers?”

“The kind that makes me believe in you. Believe in us.”

“Oh yeah? What else?” I asked, lifting her onto my desk, and her cheekbones appeared front and center.

“They make you incredibly sweet, and sweet Gianni makes me want to do nasty things with you later.”

“Later?” My lips quirked, and her head fell back, chuckling because she knew where this was headed.

“No, Gianni!” She squealed as I grabbed my phone to let Daniel know to hold everything until further notice. Hailo’s mouth was saying no, but her body language told me otherwise.

“How did your appointment go?” I asked before I got myself excited about something I couldn’t have.

“Are you asking me if I’m cleared to have sex?”

“Hell yeah, I miss you.”

“Yes, Gianni, but not here..”
