“A title doesn’t mean shit if you ain’t doing nothing with it. Anybody can make a child, but a father raises a child. I’m trying to be that, but you keep blocking.”

“I’m not.”

“You better start telling them nigga’s that come in to flirt with you that you’re taken. You don’t want me to do it for you.”

“Is that your way of asking me out?” I chuckled at how juvenile that sounded, but Mack made me feel like I was a teenager again, falling for my first crush.

“I’m not asking you shit. I want you and Cam. You want me so let everybody have what they want.”

My world was so complex. Being a single mother working to give Cam the life I never had, but Mack’s outlook was different. It was simple, and I needed simplicity in my life as I rested against him.

Being a Meraux came with many perks, but attending events like these wasn’t one of them. I supported the cause, but I would’ve preferred to cut a check instead of donating my time.

“Look at my baby!” My mother paused in front of me, adjusting my tie, and I could smell the alcohol on her breath. I tried not to judge her because her life hadn’t been hers in a long time. Alcohol was her way of coping, but it did more harm than good.

“You need to slow down tonight,” I instructed, taking the champagne flute out of her hand.

“Since when did you become the fun police? That’s usually this one,” she flung her hand toward Solana, who was approaching us.

“Tonight it’s me. Slow down, or I’m taking you home.”

“Father Gothel, just let me out. Let me enjoy myself,” she chuckled, referencing Rapunzel. It was hard to let Sophia out because she was more drunk than sober.

“I mean it,” I warned, and she rolled her eyes.

“Fine,” she huffed, excusing herself.

“Why did we get stuck with such a nutcase?” Solana asked, shaking her head as Sophia glided across the dancefloor.

“We must’ve really fucked up in a past life.”

“Apparently,” Solana chuckled, looking up at me. “You look happy for somebody who broke up with their girlfriend.”

It was funny how Kyerra ran to Solana now but failed to mention our past.

“We were messing around. It didn’t make her my girlfriend.”

“Talk to her, Ty.”

“Stay out of it.”

“Five minutes. That’s it,” Solana bartered.

I didn’t budge, and she excused herself, and Kyerra returned. Her beauty was magnified in the black dress with a high split as she stood before me, clenching her purse. Kyerra’s beauty was a weapon, and she used it to her advantage to make men bend to her will.

Every man in DuPont Falls wanted Kyerra for as long as I can remember. She was intelligent, beautiful, and appeared to have the total package. You couldn’t tell me shit when I started fucking with her. Being her first was the cherry on top, but I no longer felt the same staring at her tonight.

“Hey.”

“Wassup.”

“How have you been?” she asked nervously.

“You only have four more minutes. I wouldn’t waste it asking shit like that.”

“How long are you going to ignore me?” Kyerra asked.

“Depends. When are you going to stop blowing me up?”
