“I know you have a lot on your plate, but you’re not above the rules. When it’s time for business, put that shit up.”

“I hear you.”

“Good. Your mother is cooking dinner tonight and wants you there. It’ll be a good time to tell her.”

“After the DNA test. There's no point telling her something that might not be true.”

“I’ve already handled that.”

“What the fuck do you mean handled it. Where is Lo?”

“Safe. Come to dinner and talk to your mother,” Ross coached, but I wasn’t looking forward to the repetitious rants about the gold-digger who trapped her baby. Sometimes I wished I had another sibling to balance out my parent’s attention. They didn’t have shit else to do but focus on me, especially Xora.

Ross was in a mood. I picked up on it the moment he came in this morning. His greetings were short, and he was in his head, likely working out details of something he hadn’t made common knowledge.

“What the fuck do you mean she’s safe.”

“Exactly what I said,” Ross maintained with a stoic glare. He attempted to walk away as if the conversation was over because he said so. Ross might’ve run shit in DuPont Falls but not where my family was concerned, including Hailo. He was still holding her, which meant it was probably my baby.

“Where the fuck is she?” I ranted, grabbing Ross and shoving him into the wall.

“Where she needs to be until things are sorted out.” He wasn’t bothered by my anger while I tried to put him through the wall.

“Yo, what the fuck!” Mack yelled, forcing himself between us.

“I’ll see you at dinner tonight,” Ross adjusted his suit and walked out of the conference room.

Mack was still trying to catch up to what would make me snap like this, but I needed to find Hailo. Rushing out of the building, he didn’t hesitate to follow, finally catching up outside in the parking lot.

“Aye, are you good?” Mack asked.

“I don’t know,” I admitted because Sol wasn’t the only keeper of my secrets. She was naturally emotional, and sometimes I didn’t need that. I needed calm, level-headed feedback because my emotions sometimes could get the best of me. That’s where Mack came in.

“Wassup?”

“Remember shorty from the Ferguson?”

“The one you were booed up with all night, then dipped on your ass.” Mack joked, and his expression grew stern when I didn’t join in the laughter. “What the fuck did you do?”

“She’s pregnant.”

“Fuck.”

“I ran into her downtown with Kyerra, and she flipped out.”

“How else did you expect her to react?”

“Exactly how she did.” I wasn’t mad at Kyerra. I understood her pain but blaming me for our breakup sent me over the edge. “I’ve been calling and texting Hailo, but I haven’t heard from her.”

“You got more problems than a little bit.”

“I need to find her.” Mack and I slapped hands, and I climbed in my car when he delivered one last warning.

“Aye, don’t do anything stupid,” Mack warned.

Throwing my hand up, I slipped into the car and pulled out of the parking lot. Hailo wasn’t happy that I didn’t come by last night. I assumed that was her latest attitude, but Ross had inserted himself into my business.

Unfortunately, she had already checked out when I went to her hotel. There was no sign of her, and I was starting to panic because I knew what my family was capable of. The only saving grace was that if the baby were mine, he wouldn’t physically hurt her, but there were so many other ways he could.
