Nigga you can’t leave her in there pregnant. Turn yo ass around.

Fuck that. Her nasty-ass attitude can keep her company.

Hailo is pregnant, dawg. That’s what happens. You should’ve thought about that when you were raw dogging her pussy.

Pinching the bridge of my nose, I knew I had to go back. That created a low growl as I pushed the door open. Hailo’s back turned at the sound of the door, sucking her teeth when she realized it was me.

“It’s been a long couple of days. Let me get you out of here to a place more comfortable than this shit. I’ll feed you, get the baby checked out, and we can sort this out in the morning.”

Hailo didn’t scream and curse like she previously did. Walking over to the bed, I paused in front of her. The connection I felt to this woman already was insane. It caused my lapse in judgment the night we met. Hailo had the power to make me feel things, like the night we met, and some not so good, like right now. Family was supposed to be a cheat code for a man in my position, but I was afraid to turn that kind of power.

Hailo wiped the tears from her eyes, accepting my hand as I helped her to her feet. I opened the door, and my father and Tyson were in the hallway.

Guiding her in front of me, I didn’t stop because I wasn’t asking. Part of me wanted them to intervene because I still had some shit I needed to get off my chest. They didn’t, and I safely tucked Hailo inside my car, pulling off.

I didn’t condone my father’s drastic measures, but his statement about Hailo leaving played over in my head. Was Hailo trying to take my child and run off? There was some spark of indefinable emotion watching her sit silently in my passenger seat.

I pulled into my driveway and killed the engine. Hailo slowly climbed out of the car, quietly taking in her surroundings. Her steps were hesitant, but she entered, and her eyes popped wide, taking in my house. As much as her mouth drove me crazy earlier, the silence was worse.

“I can get Solana to pick up what you need,” I offered as Hailo slowly spun to the sound of my voice.

“I haven’t slept much, and I’m tired. I want to shower and lay down.” Extending my hand toward the stairs, she walked toward them, pausing at the top for directions. I guided Hailo down the hall to the sliding double doors to my bedroom while I grabbed everything she needed.

“The bathroom is over there. Make yourself comfortable.”

“You have a nice home,” she finally uttered.

“Thank you. This belongs to you.” I handed over her cell phone, which contained many missed calls and messages from people who cared about her.

“Thanks.”

“What do you want for dinner?”

“Sleep. That’s all I want.”

“That’s not going to feed my baby. What do you want to eat?” My raucous tone penetrated the room in a way that triggered her.

“It’s my baby too.”

“Then act like it and tell me what you want to eat.”

“I’ll think about it and text you.” I shut the door and went downstairs to call Solana. She was blowing my phone up, but I wanted to get Hailo settled.

“I’ve been calling! Are you okay? I overheard Uncle Ross telling daddy how you flipped the fuck out on everybody.” Solana rattled off so fast I could barely get a word in.

“I’m good, but I need a favor.”

“Anything.”

“I need you to pick up a few things for Hailo.”

The line went dull, and I knew Solana’s mind was in overdrive. She had opinions but often held back because she felt nobody listened to her- except me.

“What, Sol?”

“How do you know you can trust this woman?” Solana asked, expressing her concern. She was just as protective of us as we were of her- especially regarding women. Nobody was good enough in Solana’s eyes, not even Tyson, who drove her crazy.

“She’s cool enough to party with but not have my baby, huh?”
