“What y’all out here talking about?” Tyson asked, joining us.

“Yo ass,” Mack replied, covering for me. “Wassup with Amora?”

“Why are you all in my shit?”

“You’re always in everybody else’s,” I chimed in, causing Tyson to kiss his teeth.

“You still in your feelings about ‘ole girl.”

“I’m not in my feelings about shit. I said what I said. If I say it twice, shit will end differently, and that goes for everybody.” My eyes smoldered with fire when Mack’s laughter broke the silence bouncing between our chests.

“Y’all been arguing since y’all could talk. Y’all ain’t tired yet?”

“I’m good. That’s this nigga. I think Hailo’s hormones are rubbing off on his punk ass. I’m out.”

Tyson disappeared as fast as he appeared.

“You know that shit with Hailo wasn’t personal. Unc gave an order. He did what he was asked,” Mack reasoned.

“Would you have done what you were asked?” Mack prolonged responding by placing the blunt to his lips. “Exactly. That’s why he called him and not you.”

Mack was low maintenance. He kept his head down and worked hard, but it was certain shit he wasn’t willing to compromise on. Unlike Tyson, Mack would’ve called me the second he laid eyes on Hailo.

Dapping Mack up, I headed home to prepare for a long day of dealing with Hailo’s attitude. I was awake more than I slept, thinking about my unborn child. I was blessed with a great mother and wanted the same for my child. I fucked up, but I prayed that God didn’t allow my child to suffer because of it.

When the alarm went off, my arm hit the nightstand feeling around for my phone. I couldn’t calm my mind long enough to fall asleep until it was damn near time to get up. I was greeted with a text from Hailo reminding me I didn’t have to make the trip, and as much as I wanted to stay in bed, I got up.

That wasn’t an option, so I ignored it and had her send me her address. Even that became an issue, and I realized that Hailo was the independent type. She said she could drive herself since she was already leaving work. It made me wonder about her upbringing. Solana loved to be spoiled and didn’t shy away from it. Kyerra was the same way. It was all I was used to, but Hailo couldn’t be more different.

When I pulled up to her apartment complex, she strolled outside, and I opened the car door for her. I slipped inside immediately, grabbing her smoothie.

“This shit is full of sugar,” I grimaced.

“Don’t put your lips on my stuff. Who knows where they’ve been,” she sassed, wiping the straw off as if that would remove any germs.

“You left, so they haven’t been anywhere,” Annoyance hovered in her eyes.

“How lucky am I?” Hailo’s lips twisted into a sarcastic smile, likely not believing what I said.

“Luckier than you know,” I replied before turning the music up and following the navigation to the doctor’s office.

When we arrived at the doctor’s office, she allowed me to open every door inside the building. Hailo signed in, and we were quickly taken to the back, where they checked her vital signs and sat us in an examination room.

“How was your day?” I asked, tired of the awkward silence.

“Work is work. You?”

“It was cool. What do you do?”

“I work in marketing,” Her laugh filled the car with sarcasm, “Creating marketing plans and advertising plans for brands.”

“So you’re not just a pretty face and a smile.”

“Wow, is that what you thought?”

“I didn’t have time to think about much. I’m starving, so we can grab something to eat when we leave.” Hailo didn’t say anything, but she gave me a less-than-friendly glare when there was a knock at the door before it opened.

“Good morning Miss. Harrison. I see we have a guest today,” she smiled before extending her hand. “Hi, I’m Dr. Fayton.”
