“Exercise is good for the baby.”

“Gianni, are you serious right now? I’ve been up since the crack of dawn. I’m tired and want to go home,” Hailo insisted as I climbed out of the car. I walked around to the passenger side and pulled the door open.

“You will after you get some steps in.”

“You are a pain in my ass. You know that?” She sulked, folding her arms across her chest with her lip poked out.

“If it means taking care of you and my daughter. I’ll be that.” Extending my hand, she pretended to ignore it before swatting it away and climbing out of the car.

Hailo was pissed, but the longer we walked, the more her posture loosened. Halfway around the park, I stopped at a food truck and grabbed a bottle of water which she accepted.

“What happened between you and Cel?” I asked out of curiosity. I thought about it the night we met, but I never got a chance to ask because we were too busy doing shit that led us here.

“Of all the questions, why did you pick that?”

“He wasn’t too happy with you the night we met, and now you’re carrying my seed. Is he still fucking with you?”

“You don’t have to worry about him,” Hailo assured me, but I saw the look in his eyes that night.

“Are you going to answer my question?” she drew in a stuttered gasp while her head roamed from side to side, weighing her options. “How else are we supposed to get to know each other?”

“I, um, I caught him cheating at our wedding rehearsal.” A flash of grief ripped through her, and it was apparent that the misery of that day still haunted her.

“Engaged, huh? You were about to marry that clown but giving me a hard time. That’s crazy.”

“I knew Marcel a lot longer than I’ve known you.”

“How did that work out for you?”

“Fuck you.”

“I’m just saying.”

“How did Kyerra take the news?” Hailo’s attraction for me didn’t go beyond the physical, but there was a twang in her voice every time she mentioned Kyerra’s name.

“How any woman would. She’s hurt and angry.”

“I’d be angry too if my man cheated and got somebody else pregnant that he now has to marry.”

“Be clear. I didn’t cheat on Kyerra. We weren’t together when I fucked you.”

“What about you? Are you angry too?” Hailo asked, ignoring my response to her accusation.

“I don’t know you, so I can’t say I’m happy about it, but I don’t have anybody to blame but myself.”

“You knew me enough to pull a gun on a stranger,” Hailo reasoned.

“I like the adrenaline rush,” I turned, easing into a smile that put one on her face too.

“Whatever.”

“I bet you’re happy. You get a mini-me.”

“I just want a healthy baby,” Hailo rushed out between swigs of her water.

“That’s a cop-out. Everybody wants a healthy baby.”

“Then what did you want?”
