“Your mouth. You don’t know what to say out of it.”

“This coming from you?” My head swung lazily to the side at her response.

“I’m serious, Gianni,” she whined in a warm voice that forced me to retreat.

“I’ll be good, Lo.”

“I mean it, and she doesn’t need to know anything about this arrangement. We’re pregnant and making this work. That’s it.”

“What will you tell her when we get married?”

“You’re the one well-versed in this situation. What should I tell her?”

“I’ll handle it,” I volunteered, thinking of Mack’s advice. This wasn’t easy for Hailo, and she valued the people closest to her like I did my family.

“Absolutely not. What are you going to say?”

“You have to learn to trust me. This will be good practice.”

“Gianni.”

“I told you I’ll behave. Trust me.”

“I’m never having another one-night stand in my life,” Hailo groaned while her elbow rested against the door in distress.

“Goddamn, right, you’re not. It’s me and you, Pretty Lady.” My smile didn’t amuse Hailo as her head hit the back of the seat, likely regretting tugging on my shirt that night.

We arrived at a ranch-style single-family home and climbed out of the car- Hailo was much more hesitant than me. She used her manicured nail to hit the doorbell, announcing our arrival before using her key to let us in.

“Hey, mama.”

“Look at you!” Sadie’s eyes watered, staring at her only child, who was about to bring one into the world herself.

“Don’t you say it!” Hailo warned. She was irritated after stepping on the scale at the doctor’s office yesterday.

“I’m not scared of you, little girl,” Sadie replied, rubbing her stomach while Hailo rolled her eyes, but she was careful not to let Sadie see her.

“You should be. That attitude is vicious,” I chimed in, and Hailo whipped her head around, glaring at me.

“This is Gianni,” Hailo tossed out like I was a random nigga off the street.

“What kind of introduction is that?” Sadie questioned, with her hands perched on her hips that Hailo inherited.

“It’s all good. I know you raised her better than that. It’s nice to meet you.”

“It’s nice to meet you too, sweetheart. What’s wrong with her?”

“It changes by the day,” I aimlessly replied, causing Sadie to chuckle.

“I can hear you,” Hailo yelled with her head stuck inside the refrigerator. “You don’t have any strawberries in here?”

“Do you see any strawberries, young lady?”

“No, but I wish I did. Your granddaughter is hungry.”

“I dreamed she was bald just like you were too.”

“Bald?”
