“Well, what is your style so we can get on with this,” Solana fussed and tapped away on her iPad.

“Am I interrupting?”

My mother looked up just in time to see me pause in the doorway. “Hey, baby.”

“Wassup Mama.” I leaned down and kissed her cheek before playfully mushing Solana in the head.

“Going over dresses for the fundraising Gala.” Sophia flipped her eyes at the fancy event she was not interested in attending. “It’s months away. Why do we have to do this now?”

“Is that why you called me here?” I asked, siding with Sophia for once. The gala was months out, so I didn’t see the point in talking about it either.

“Yes. I’ve been handed the delicate task of ensuring everybody is dressed to impress,” Solana explained in an animated tone expressing her true feelings about the task. “Especially when daddy knows you would forget.”

And I did. It wasn’t at the top of my priority list. Especially months out from the day of the event.

“What do you have for me?” I asked, double-checking the time on my watch. I had to meet Gianni shortly though I wasn’t thrilled about it. I didn’t want to be late.

Solana smiled, handing over her iPad as I scrolled through four looks she’d put together for me. She didn’t see this as a talent, but it was for sure. It was better than anything I could’ve put together for myself.

“These are dope.”

“Are you being funny?”

“I fuck around a lot, but I’m serious. You did your thing.”

“Much better options than you gave me,” Sophia mumbled, leaning over enough to see the screen.

“Maybe if you’d put the glass down, you could concentrate.”

“It’s the only thing saving you since you’ve lost your mind talking to me crazy.”

“I like the butterscotch the best,” I replied, interjecting before Sophia went off the deep end.

“Thank you for making this easy and painless.” Solana was speaking to me but smiling at my mother. Sophia groaned, mumbling something else I couldn’t make out before dismissing herself from the family room.

“What was that?”

“Who knows? She’s in one of her moods today,” Solana hunched, disregarding our mother’s ever-changing mood.

“That seems to be going around in this family,” I replied, and her eyebrows rose out of curiosity. “Gi has been a pain in my eyes.”

“He has a lot going on.”

“Gi knew the rules. He did that to himself,” I yawned because I wasn’t that invested in the situation.

“And Kyerra too.”

“How is she doing?”

“Heartbroken but doing the best she can.”

“She’ll be aite, but I’m out.”

Dipping out the front door, I went to headquarters to meet Gi. I hoped spending time with Hailo put him in a better mood today. Mack was supposed to be with me doing runs today, but he conveniently had some other shit to do. It was his way of forcing Gi and me to have a conversation, but it wasn’t much to discuss from where I was standing.

He came strolling out of the building wearing the same rigid expression he had the last time I saw him. Gi volunteered to drive, and I didn’t protest in hopes of keeping the conversation at a minimum.

After collecting Poe’s payment to continue doing business in DuPont Falls, we had to meet with Sonny, who had more excuses than money. Nothing pissed me off more than wasting my time, especially when I had more important shit to do.
