“You have to relax sometime. Everything isn’t a personal attack on Tyson, and believe it or not. Some shit is bigger than business, like a little girl with a bad heart.”

“Y’all nigga’s are getting soft. Her heart won’t get better overnight. So what happens the next time Sonny doesn’t have our shit.”

“Then you handle it.”

“That’s backward and a waste of fuckin’ time.”

“Go put your face in some titties to calm down, man.”

“Oh, I plan to, but I need to fuel up first,” The mischievous grin on Tyson’s face let me know it was going to be a wild night.

I decided to stick around and keep an eye on him. Tyson said he was okay, but I knew he wasn’t. It was just easier to lie about it. I got a few dances in our usual section to kill time, but my eyes always found their way back to Skylar. She was so preoccupied, probably worried about Cam, that she had collided with Bianca more times than I could count.

After dropping by Prince’s office to ask him for a favor, I had reached my limit for the night. I needed to go home and recharge before it was time to do it again tomorrow.

The city was truly beautiful at night. The skyscrapers lit up the strip like no other. My phone rang, and paused the music blaring through the speakers. An unsaved number calling my phone this time of night immediately put me on edge because it was never good.

“Who is this?” I answered, and I could hear panting on the other end. “Who the fuck is this?”

“S-Sky,” she replied, stammering over her words as if unsure of her name. She quickly tried to recover, clearing her throat. “Skylar.”

“Oh, wassup?” I relaxed against the leather interior, sliding my hand to the bottom of the steering wheel.

“Nothing. Tyson gave me your number,” she replied as if she could read my thoughts. I wasn’t tripping, but I was genuinely curious.

“Are you good?”

“Prince called me into his office at the end of my shift. He said I had a very generous tipper tonight that left me something.”

“Oh yeah. What’s that?”

She sucked her teeth into the speaker, and the corner of my mouth rose.

“A lot of money that I know damn well I didn’t earn. It wasn’t one of my best nights.”

“Sounds like somebody else felt differently.”

“Is that somebody you?”

“Me?” I repeated simply because I didn’t want the conversation to end.

“Macklen.” Sky huffed, growing irritated with the back and forth.

“Just because you’re cute doesn’t mean you get to call me that.” I hated my name. Nobody but my mother and Solana could get away with that, but it didn’t sound half bad when Skylar said it.

I imagined Skylar blushing from my compliment through the phone. Instead of admitting she was flattered, she played tough, “Who’s going to stop me?”

“Me, but I don’t think you’re ready for that.”

“Did you leave the money or not, Macklen?” she asked, purposely calling me by my government name.

“Nobody should have to choose between being a mother and paying the bills. Next time you won’t have to unless you trick that shit up.”

“I can’t-.”

“Can’t take my money?” I asked, attempting to finish her sentence.

“No, I wasn’t going to say that. I’m not stupid,” she chuckled, “Nobody’s ever done anything like this for me before.”
