“Before you, Sol was my partner in crime. I’m the only one that treats her like an adult, so we look out for each other. She didn’t have my back the way I always have hers.”

“Was it about me?”

He didn’t respond, likely trying not to stir the pot, but I knew the answer. Thankfully, Marcel was an only child, but I’d seen how possessive sisters could be regarding their brothers. Even though Solana wasn’t his sister, they seemed close.

“It’s nothing personal. She’s friends with Kyerra.”

“Well, isn’t that convenient? Tell me another story. Less horrifying, please.”

“What do you want to know?”

“Any and everything.”

I could tell he was just as scared as I was, but we both carelessly climbed into each other's arms and spent the rest of the night sharing stories pretending that love had found us.

Chapter Eight

I didn’t tell him that, but Mack was right. My home had returned to my place of peace since taking Hailo on a date. We came to an understanding, and she was easier to tolerate. I was positive she felt the same. Hailo still had moments, but they were a lot easier to handle. I had a full schedule today between business and putting the finishing touches on Mack’s party.

“I knew I would find your ass in here,” I joked, entering the kitchen to find Hailo standing at the sink.

“I made you breakfast, but I should drop it on the floor since you wanna talk shit.”

“Thank you, Pretty Lady.”

“Yeah, yeah, you’re welcome,” Hailo slid the plate of sausage, eggs, and fruit in front of me before going back to sipping on the smoothie she had to have, or the day would go to hell for all of us.

“What kind of ring did Cel propose with?” I asked, more focused on my plate than Hailo. She was staring, annoyed that I had brought him up.

“Why?”

We became married at dinner when she signed on the dotted line, but Hailo didn’t have a ring. She had yet to talk to her mother about it, which prolonged wedding planning.

“You need a ring. I don’t know what you like and don’t want to pick shit like you already had.”

“Careful, your jealous side is showing again. I’m starting to think you like me.”

“Answer the question.” It was easy to do now that we had come to an understanding. There was still a lot we didn’t know about each other and even more to do before the baby, but we were trying, which brought peace to us both.

Hailo picked up her phone and finally settled on a picture of her showing off a ring that wasn’t that impressive. She was also wearing a fake ass smile that many thoughts were genuine, but I knew better.

“You actually liked that shit?” Marquise cut wasn’t my favorite, but I would make it happen if that’s what she wanted.

“It wouldn’t have been my first choice, but the thought counted. Plus, it looked unique, and I liked that.”

“What would be your first choice?”

“I’m more of an oval or pear girl in a simple setting. Like me,” she replied confidently.

“Simple?” I chuckled, wiping the smile off her face. “That’s not a word I would use to describe you.”

“This coming from the nigga who hardly knows me,” she retorted as I dropped my plate in the sink.

“I’m working on that.” I stood behind Hailo as her cheek met her shoulder. “I have a busy day, so I’ll probably be home late. If you need anything, call me. If you can’t reach me, call Daniel.”

“Who is Daniel?”

“He’s my assistant. He’ll know what to do or how to get in touch with Tyson or Mack if I’m busy.”
