“What do you think it is?” I inquired because Mack didn’t speak to hear himself talk. If he was sharing, he had enough information to back up whatever theory he had come up with in that brain of his.

“I can’t call it just yet, but I think Uncle Lucas has been doing something he has no business doing. I’m sitting on it for now, though.”

“You told Tyson?”

“Nah, not yet.”

“Good call. Keep me posted,” I replied, distracted by Sky’s text. “Fuck.”

“What did you do now?” Mack threw his head back and chuckled.

“Nothing. I needed Sky to help me with something, but she’s got some shit going on.”

“I’m out. I’ll hit you later.” Mack and I slapped hands as he strode toward the door. “I hope that something doesn’t have shit to do with the birthday party I don’t want,” Mack advised before walking out of my office.

Ignoring Mack’s warning, I returned to work so I wouldn’t be in the office any later than I had to be. I hadn’t heard from Hailo since I left this morning, so I scribbled on a sticky note as a reminder to check on her.

“We have a problem,” Trent seethed, entering my office, but Daniel had already alerted me of his presence.

“What can I do for you?” I asked, removing my glasses and leaning back in my seat.

“I just got a call from TJ. Half of my shit is stuck in the port. What the fuck is going on?”

Everybody had a different hustle, and The Pierre family hustled guns. They were influential in their own right, but since DuPont Falls owned all the major ports, that put us a notch above everybody else. Nobody in the surrounding areas could do shit without our consent.

“You’re not upholding your part of the deal. Why the fuck should we?”

“What are you talking about?”

“You doing business with the Mayans proves you can’t be trusted. Every action has a consequence, and this is yours.”

The Mayans weren’t in our alliance which Trent was aware of. They had just got a large shipment of guns that belonged to the Pierre Family. So if he didn’t okay the cargo, he had a much bigger problem that needed to be addressed instead of questioning me.

“I’m not doing business with the Mayans. What the fuck are you talking about?” he probed.

“Hey. Daniel said you had a busy day, so I decided.” Hailo stopped mid-stride as her nostrils flared, staring at him. I knew the look well. She was angry, which caused me to stand from my desk.

“Hailo,” Trent called out as he rose to his feet.

Her chest heaved as fear, anger, and pain glittered in her eyes. The unwelcome tension bounced off every wall in my office.

“How the fuck do you know, my wife?” I barked, wandering around my desk in case I had to put my foot up Trent’s ass.

“Your wife?” He repeated with furrowed brows while Hailo remained stuck in the middle of my floor. “This is my daughter.”

“Your daughter? You told me your father was dead,” I shifted to Hailo, waiting for an explanation.

“He is to me,” she replied boldly, with no emotion behind her words, causing all oxygen to leave Trent’s chest.

“That’s not fair, Hailo. I’ve tried-.”

“Tried? Don’t even go there with me.”

“Yes, tried! I reached out after you called off the wedding. You didn’t answer or return my calls.”

“I didn’t want to call back and risk your wife seeing my name in your phone.”

“I haven’t always been perfect, but I love you. I’ve always loved you,” Trent maintained, but the infamous wall had gone back up as his plea fell on deaf ears.
