“It depends. Are you helping Gi plan a party for my birthday?”

“No,” she replied, too quick for that to be the truth.

“You’re a bad liar.”

“Who said I’m lying?”

“Me. That’s who. You probably got your jaw clenched tight and face balled up like you always do.”

“Whatever,” she smiled. I could hear it in her voice which caused me to relax.

“Wassup? Why do you sound so stressed?”

“You really think you know me.”

“Not everything, but I know you’re stressing about something right now.”

“It’s nothing I can’t handle. I don’t need you to save the day.”

“What about the night?”

Skylar laughed infectiously, and I could hear her moving around in the background. “I don’t need you to save the night either.”

“You sure about that?” she hesitated, likely at war with her thoughts the same way I was before I called. “What do you need, Skylar?”

“It’s been a day. I didn’t even realize I didn’t eat tonight, but I don’t feel like cooking. I would run out, but Cam is asleep already,” she rattled off as if she needed to explain or justify asking for anything. Skylar wasn’t used to having anybody do shit for her. That was clear.

“So ask me.”

Hesitation reared its head again in silence. “Can you bring me something to eat?”

“No,” Whether she asked or not, I was pulling up. “I’m fucking with you. What do you want?”

“It doesn’t matter. Whatever is easiest for you.”

“When somebody asks what you want, don’t be too proud or stubborn to tell them. Either they will deliver or they won't, but at least you know where you stand. So, what do you want to eat?”

“Papa Smurfs.”

“Send me your address. I’ll be on my way in a minute.”

“Okay.”

Pulling out of my driveway, I drove to pick up Sky’s food. A weird feeling sat in my stomach throughout the trip, but I tried to ignore it. It felt like somebody was tickling my insides, and a nigga wasn’t even ticklish.

When I neared her apartment, I called, “I’m about to pull up.”

“I can come out and grab it,” Sky offered.

“It’s late. You don’t need to be standing outside,” Sky was going to drive me crazy fixing the things in her I didn’t break. The challenge didn’t scare me away. It made me want to know everything.

I reached her apartment and climbed out of the car with Skylar’s food in hand. She assured me Camdyn was asleep, but I couldn’t show up with something for Sky and not her. My fist tapped the door loud enough for her to hear but hopefully not wake Camdyn. Her footsteps neared, and she paused, checking the peephole before unlocking the door.

“Special delivery,” I smiled, holding the bag up.

“Thanks, Mack.”

“You’re welcome,” I replied, handing it over.
