“Better now that she’s back with her man.”

Hailo chuckled, “You sound annoyed.”

“It’s been a long day.”

“So what happens now? They didn’t seem happy with your decision.”

“I don’t know. I guess we’ll find out.”

“DuPont Falls is a weird place. There are all these rules about what you can and can’t do and who you can do it with. It’s stupid and outdated. That’s why everybody is suffering. Just let people do what they want,” Hailo rambled, sifting through her pajama drawer.

“Is your life stupid? All of this is stupid,” I asked, waving my arms around the room while Hailo looked on in confusion.

“What?”

“You want out too?”

Her brows met in the middle of her face, trying to understand where all my emotions came from.

“I wanted to do you because I was proud you did the right thing, but your insecurities are frying your brain. I’m going downstairs before it spreads to me.”

Hailo shoved the drawer shut and stormed out of our bedroom. As I retreated to the shower, the weight of our argument pressed heavily on my shoulders. The words exchanged in the heat of the moment replayed like a broken record in my mind, each syllable carrying the sting of misinterpretation. After collecting my thoughts and reflecting on my reaction, I mustered the courage to descend the stairs, determined to smooth things over with the woman who meant everything to me.

We had been good, so I forgot how cold Hailo could be when her feelings were hurt. She saw me standing in front of the couch but refused to say a word, so I laid on top of her and made myself comfortable.

“Get off!” Hailo complained as if she could wiggle her way from underneath me.

“I’ve been fighting the world and everybody else’s problems all day. I don’t wanna fight with my wife too,” I admitted because a man always admits when he’s wrong, and I was.

It took a few moments, but she finally put her phone down and ran her hand across my head with a deep sigh.

“You have an odd way of showing it, Gianni Meraux.”

“I’m sorry,” I conceded because my marriage was more important than my ego.

“What is going on with you tonight?”

“Everybody’s shit has been in turmoil lately. I don’t want that to be us.”

“We’re fine, Gianni.”

“Are we?”

“As long as you stop acting crazy. Otherwise, I might have to call Chauncy.”

I lifted my head enough to look Hailo in her eyes. “Don’t fuck with me right now,” but she found my rebuttal funny.

“You look so cute and jealous.” She smirked, pinching my cheek before I returned to resting on her chest. “Growing old together is a choice, and we chose each other. No matter how we started, we did the work. Trust that Gianni. Trust me.”

“I was tripping earlier, and you didn’t deserve that. You fuck my head up, Lo. Thinking about life without you makes me feel all this deep irrational shit.”

“Then stop,” she chuckled. “You’re the one torturing yourself. I’m not going anywhere.”

“Remember that shit the next time your brain starts overthinking.”

“We’re locked in. Isn’t that what you said?”

“I know what I said.”
