“Of course.”

“Then all that other shit doesn’t matter. It’s me and you. You got me?” He asked, lifting my chin and pecking my lips.

“I got you, honey.”

“Good. You look fine. Now let’s go.”

Quest damn near dragged me out of our bedroom, guiding me through our half-furnished home. I wasn’t in a rush to get it all done. This was our forever home, so I wanted to ensure it was done right.

“Can your people cook?” Quest asked, pulling out of the driveway.

“Of course they can.”

“Y’all come from money. Shit, I thought a chef made every meal.”

My eyes narrowed at the sarcasm on his face. Quest tried to lighten my mood because he hated seeing me stressed or upset. It was one of the things I loved most about him.

“You think you’re so funny.”

“You smiled.”

I did, and I couldn’t take it back, so I rolled my eyes and straightened in my seat.

“Can your family cook?”

“My Pops can. My mom can’t do shit but make reservations.”

“Really?” Quest gave me a quick, serious look. “Damn. Neither of my parents cooked much, so I spent a lot of time at Gianni’s house. My aunt cooked every single night.”

I smiled at the memories because those were some of the best days. On the outside, I had everything, but home felt like torture. It felt so cold and empty compared to being at Aunt Xora’s. There, you could feel the love in the air like a warm hug.

“Now I see why your greedy ass was always there.”

“Shut up!” I gritted, playfully hitting him in the arm.

The remainder of the ride was quiet until Quest pulled into the driveway and parked.

“You ready?”

I nodded, and he climbed out and opened the door so I could join him. Standing on the porch, I felt mixed emotions, but regardless of what happened today, it wouldn’t change anything between Quest and me. We made that promise to each other before we left, and I intended to keep it.

Ringing the doorbell, I waited impatiently with Quest’s arm secured around my waist.

“Why are you ringing the doorbell like a stranger?” Uncle Ross asked, opening the door with a smile. I shrugged my shoulders, peering back at Quest before hugging my uncle. “I’m happy to see you, sweetheart.”

“This is my husband, Quest. Quest, this is my Uncle Ross.” I explained, despite them both knowing of each other. It was their first official meeting, and my uncle gave me a funny face wrapped in a smile.

“Nice to meet you, Husband Quest.” He offered Quest his hand.

“Thank you for having us.”

“Of course. You’re family now.” Uncle Ross was talking to Quest but staring at me because he knew I needed to hear it.

We followed Uncle Ross through the house to the kitchen, where all the women were preparing dinner.

“I thought you were going to stand me up,” Aunt Xora smiled, wiping her hands to hug me.

“I told you we were coming.”
