“Nice of you to join us today,” Gi complained.

“Hailo needs to give your grumpy ass some pussy.” Tyson joked, using the same insult Gi did a few days ago. They both liked delivering jabs, but neither wanted to receive them. “I was on a call with the city council’s office. Vincent Carmichael showed his ass this morning,” Tyson explained.

I nodded, somewhat impressed that he was actually handling business and not fucking off. He had really turned shit around, and that said a lot for Tyson, considering the way he was moving at one point.

“Who the fuck is that?” Mack asked.

“The leader of the investment group that purchased the Blazers. They held a press conference discussing plans for a new stadium, trying to put pressure on us to get the deal done,” Tyson explained.

We were a three-headed monster, each with an equal say in decisions. That was the easiest way to run things since taking over. We each had a lane to monitor, and this was Tyson’s.

“So, what’s the hold-up?” Gi asked.

“Have you looked at the plans he submitted? He thinks trying to win the people over with jobs and shit is going to force our hand. Pussy.”

“So, what’s the play?” I asked because all the other details didn’t matter.

“We have a meeting scheduled. Afterward, I’ll have a better answer,” Tyson explained.

We moved on to the next order of business on the agenda before going our separate ways. Gi and Tyson had a lot to handle, but my day was pretty light. So I focused on completing each task so I could take my ass home.

“Hey baby,” Sky smiled with her face tilted up as I walked in. I chuckled before obliging her because she looked so much like Cam. “How was your day?”

“It was cool. How was class?” I asked.

“Boring.”

The doorbell ringing hit the pause button on our conversation.

“Are you expecting somebody?”

Sky shook her head, and I walked down the hallway to the front door, surprised to see my soon-to-be mother-in-law standing on the porch.

“Mack, it’s so good to see you again!” She smiled excitedly.

“Hey, Adria. Come on in.”

Her name had Sky flying around the corner because her ears had to have deceived her.

“Mom!” Sky exclaimed. “What are you doing here?”

“I raised her better than that,” Adria explained, leaning into my embrace as she rolled her suitcase inside. “Is that any way to greet your mother?”

“Hi, Mom.”

Adria hugged Sky, then stepped back, taking in the sight. She marveled at the staircase and vaulted ceilings before asking, “Where’s my grandbaby?” Adria was still on the move, parking her suitcase against the wall and heading into the living room.

“You didn’t know she was coming?” I whispered, closing the space between Sky and me.

“Of course not. Adria does what she wants to do.” Sky rolled her eyes and entered the living room where Adria had shed her jacket. She moved around the living room, admiring the artwork and décor.

“Marcus picked her up from school today.”

“Marcus?” Adria’s head whipped around at the mention of his name. “Just like a nigga to show up when they feel like it. That’s nice, I guess.”

“What are you doing here? And without calling first.” Sky emphasized.

“I called, but you didn’t answer the phone. Mack, do you answer the phone when your mother calls?” Adria asked, deflecting from Sky’s point.
