“Macklen,” Sky called out, but staying would only lead to me saying something I couldn’t take back, and I loved Sky enough not to put either of us in that position.

Chapter Seven

My girls were in town, and I couldn’t wait to hit the city like old times. Life had been so busy I couldn’t remember the last time we were in the same room. My girls had finally touched down, and I couldn’t wait to turn up with them.

“Don’t show your ass tonight,” Gianni threatened as I got dressed.

“You sound worried.”

“What the fuck do I need to be worried about?”

“What could Gianni Meraux possibly have to worry about?” I taunted.

“I’m serious, Hailo. Be safe.”

His tone made me pause, outlining my lips and giving him my undivided attention.

“What’s going on Gianni?”

“Nothing.”

“Then why do you keep telling me to be careful all of a sudden?”

“You’re getting excited over nothing,” he replied, addressing the lines on my forehead and the change in my tone.

“Is it nothing? Because I don’t remember getting this speech the last time I went out.”

We had grown past the stage of not knowing each other. Some days, we knew each other too well, so I was overthinking his statement. Gianni was worried about something but chose to deflect instead.

“You didn’t wear this dress the last time you went out either.” The smirk on my face had Gianni shaking his head as he walked behind me in the mirror. “You know what orange does to a nigga. You probably did it on purpose, too.”

Gianni pecked my neck, trying to deflect.

“You’re trying to change the subject.”

“You’re looking too good. Got me ready to sneak you into the bathroom.”

Even though I knew what he was doing, I still indulged him. “Why the bathroom?”

“Live on the wild side, Lo.”

“So I can hear Denim and Niyomi’s mouth. No, thank you.”

“That’s wild. I thought they were my homies.”

“We’ve had to reschedule three times. Not even you can come between this night out.”

“Yeah, aite. Have fun, but I hope you popped that pill this morning ‘cause I’m shooting that club up later,” Gianni warned.

“Who said I was coming home?” I taunted.

Gianni’s smile vanished as he grabbed the back of my neck. “You don’t want me to come looking for you.”

“I might. I like it when you talk like that.”

He shook his head and pecked my lips. “But I’m the reason you keep getting pregnant.”

Nobody ever told me how much of an aphrodisiac it was having a good man. Damn near everything Gianni did turned me on in some way from watching him father our children. The love he gave my mother. Or Gianni’s randomly asking what else I needed from him as if he wasn’t perfect already.
