I sighed and relaxed against her shoulder again.

“I know, and I think I’m running out of time. He’s tired of sneaking around, and so am I.”

“You took the first step today. If you love Quest, you know what you have to do.”

“I know,” I sighed.

After being the only girl for so long, I valued my relationship with the girls. Having them around was a breath of fresh air I didn’t want to lose.

“Are you sure this nigga isn’t on some funny shit?”

“No, he’s not like that.”

“I’ll take your word for it, but I promise if he does anything to you, I’ll kill him myself.”

“Relax, Xena Warrior Princess. Quest is cool.”

“You only get one life to live. Everybody else is living theirs. I suggest you start living yours before you’re old and alone with many regrets.” Climbing out of my bed, Hailo left me alone with her speech floating around in my head.

Chapter Nine

Being married to a Meraux meant a lot of free time that even caring for Bryson couldn’t fill. I loved my son but never imagined myself as a stay-at-home mother. As a compromise, we agreed that I could help Tyson at the office when I wasn’t doing charity work with the girls. Thankfully, Sophia’s guilt had her trying to right her wrongs by being the best grandma, so she agreed to babysit Bryson because, according to Tyson, daycare was out of the question.

After dropping him off, I checked in with Solana because I hadn’t seen her since the family dinner. When I reached out, each response was drier than the last. Something was happening with her, so I grabbed breakfast and drove to her apartment, hoping to find out.

Thankfully, Solana opened the door but didn’t look as excited to see me.

“Hey.”

“Morning. Have you eaten?” I asked.

“No.”

“Well, you’re in luck. I picked up food,” I walked inside and sat the bag on the counter separating our orders.

“Did Tyson send you?” Solana asked.

My neck craned at her dry tone. “Nobody sent me.”

“What did you pick up?” She asked, reaching for the bag, but I snatched it back.

“What’s going on with you?”

“Nothing.”

“Something is. You’ve been weird as fuck lately.”

“Nothing I feel like talking about.”

“With me?” I asked, finishing her sentence.

“I didn’t say that,” Solana quipped.

“You didn’t have to. Hailo left right after you stormed out of dinner. Did you tell her the same thing?”

“Don’t put me in the middle of your shit with Hailo.”

“I’m just asking a question!”
