“You’re welcome, Princess.”

“Did you guys get everything straight?”

“Not yet, so I’ll probably be busy all day.” Solana went back to poking around her plate. “It’s already dead.”

My joke garnered a smirk from her. “Is it okay if I stay here?”

“You don’t have to ask. You’re welcome wherever I am.” Solana stared at me, and the only emotion in her eyes was relief, so I had to ask. “Are you using me to hide from your people?”

“I’m not hiding. I like being here with you,” she explained.

“It’s your world. I just live in it, so you can stay as long as you want.”

“For somebody who complains about how spoiled I am, you sure give me my way a lot,” Solana taunted.

“Good pussy turns me into a bitch,” I joked.

“Wow, really?”

“I’m fuckin’ with you. After last night, I’m sure I’ll see your people sooner than later, and they might be looking for you.”

“What do you mean after last night?”

“Somebody robbed the casino. A lot of money is missing, which won’t go over well.”

Solana hated being treated like a child, so I didn’t sugarcoat shit. This came with being with me, and since that’s what she wanted, this was her first test.

“No, it’s not,” she agreed.

“So that’s what I’m on until we get to the bottom of it. I won’t have much time, but I’ll check in and call if you need me. Cool?” Solana nodded, deep in thought about the many ways this shit could end. “You hear me?”

“Yeah, that’s cool,” she smiled, trying to distract me from the worry creasing her forehead. “I’ll be here whenever you get back.”

“I love you.”

She halted like she was shocked to hear the words leave my mouth. I hadn’t uttered those words yet, but my actions should’ve told her this was love. That was the only answer to risking everything by crossing the line with her.

“I love you too.”

Heading into the bathroom, I had to get ready to start my day while she finished breakfast.

Chapter Eleven

Things between Mack and me weren’t as tense, but they weren’t normal either. I hated the questions in his eyes every time he looked at me. My mom was still here, adding another layer of complexity to the dynamic in my home.

Since I was up early studying, I decided to cook breakfast, hoping to feel that thing that only Mack could provide. That thing that made me stay out all night with him on his birthday years ago. Whatever that thing was, I had never felt it from a man before. Now that I had, I felt like I was going crazy without it.

I was almost finished cooking when Mack rushed down the stairs.

“I gotta head out.”

“Is everybody okay?” I asked because I was still in sync with him. Mack was as laid back as they came. When he wasn’t, it was never a good sign.

“As far as I know. What do you and Cam have planned today?”

“She’s going with Marcus and Ember.”

“Iono about that,” Mack quipped.
