I’m not sure what part of my statement caused Mack to return to his shell, but the conversation was over for the remainder of the ride. Mack pulled into the driveway, maneuvering around various cars, and we climbed out.

Shortly after, Tyson and his family arrived, and my parents were the last guests so we could start this meeting. Then, I realized one face was missing.

“Where is Solana?”

Everybody looked to each other for answers combined with shrugs. When nobody spoke up, I could see Tyson growing concerned.

“When was the last time anyone spoke to her?” Dad asked Uncle Lucas, who looked just as worried.

“When was the last time anyone spoke to her?” Mom rephrased the question, growing worried.

“I stopped by a few days ago. She was being weird,” Kyerra explained.

“Weird, how?” Uncle Lucas asked, sitting up in his seat because, until now, he likely assumed Solana was still in her feelings about their argument.

“Extra snappy and defensive. I asked her what was wrong, but she started a random argument, so I left.”

Hailo rolled her eyes at the details Kyerra shared before adding her own. “I spoke to her yesterday.”

“About what?” I asked.

“Just regular conversation. She seemed fine.”

“Of course she did,” Kyerra muttered, adjusting her seat.

“If you have something to say, speak up!” Hailo yelled, turning around.

“Hailo.” I raised my voice enough to force her eyes on me and shook my head. Now wasn’t the time or place for another pointless exchange between them.

“How much money was stolen?” Uncle Everett asked.

“Too much,” Tyson paused, sipping the drink he had made himself on the way in.

I looked to Mack to see if he wanted to jump in, but he was too busy staring across the room at Sky to focus on anything being discussed.

“Quest and Morgan are working on it. In the meantime, we’ll see what we can find out on our own,” I explained.

“Can we trust them?” Uncle Lucas asked.

“You picked a fine time to ask,” Mack rebutted.

“If you live long enough, you’ll make mistakes, too,” he replied, defending himself.

“Macklen,” Aunt Mia muttered to reel her only child back in.

The meeting concluded, leaving the room thick with tension and uncertainty. Pops felt compelled to do something despite no longer being in charge, so he decided we would all stay for dinner. We settled on a collective choice of takeout, the anticipation of the aroma of our preferred cuisines filling the air as we eagerly awaited our food.

As the night unfolded and laughter echoed through the walls, the family dispersed individually. The residual happiness from the evening lingered, creating a cozy backdrop as I stood in the doorway of our bathroom after tucking the kids in for bed.

“What Gianni?” Hailo hated it when I stared, but watching her do her skincare routine entertained me.

“You can’t argue with Kyerra at every function,” I explained.

“I didn’t say anything to her.”

“Your mouth didn’t, but your face said plenty.”

“Well, that’s progress. It used to come out of my mouth.”
