“You were amazing!”

“Thank you. Mack helped me practice my lines,” Cam bragged, holding her hand out, waiting for me to slap her a five.

“That’s um. That’s great.”

“I love your hair!” Ember’s daughter, Alaina, complimented her.

“Thank you.”

The two of them engaged in childlike conversation while Marcus slid his hands in his pockets.

“We’d love to take Cam out to celebrate.”

“Yay! Please, Mommy!” Cam’s fingers were intertwined, and her lip poked out, hoping to sway Sky.

“I don’t know. It’s a school night.”

“It’s just one night, Sky,” Marcus argued.

Sky looked back at me, trying to read how I felt about the situation because I was Cam's father, and she valued my opinion above his regardless of Marcus being her biological father.

“Pretty please! I promise I’ll go straight to bed,” Cam begged.

Against her better judgment, Sky conceded. “Fine, but have her home before nine.”

“We’ll definitely have her back,” Ember added.

“Be a good girl. I’ll see you later, boo.” Sky bent down and hugged Cam like she’d never see her again.

“I love you.” I planted a quick kiss on her head because she didn’t care about any of us now that she had a friend.

“Love you too.”

I wrapped my arm around Sky’s neck and headed to the car. She climbed inside, tapping the door panel because her nerves were shot whenever Cam was alone with Marcus.

“Why didn’t you say anything?” Sky scoffed.

“About what?”

“You know what, Macklen.”

Some women struggled with allowing another man into the process of raising a child that wasn’t his. Sky didn’t, and I honestly wasn’t sure why because she was protective as fuck when it came to Camdyn.

“What did you want me to say?”

“Something.”

“You trippin’ on me because I didn’t save the day.”

“I’m not trippin’.” I stole a glance at her face before focusing on the road. “I’m not. It’s just sometimes I don’t know what I’m doing. He’s using my baby as a pawn for some woman, and it infuriates me! He didn’t care about her before Ember, but he’s doing it now. That’s what’s most important, even if it’s for the wrong reason.”

“Cam will be fine. Stop worrying about what he is or isn’t doing. Handle your job, and I’ll handle mine.”

“Okay.”

“We good?” I asked after a few moments.

“We’re good.”
