“And giving him money, too. Hush money!” Adria added, causing Sky to turn around and snap her fingers as if she was coherent enough to comply.

Sky looked identical to Cam whenever she was in trouble. She avoided eye contact because her eyes were filled with tears while she bit the corner of her mouth.

“You’re letting another nigga dictate what the fuck we do in this house! Putting money in his fuckin’ pocket when he doesn’t even take care of his kid!”

“It’s my money. That’s what you said,” Sky rationalized as if that made it better.

“I don’t give a fuck!” The words barreling from my chest caused Sky to jump because the last time I was this pissed off, she was unconscious. She hadn’t witnessed this side of me, and it was a far cry from the laid-back teddy bear she was used to.

“Take your mother upstairs. We need to talk now, and I’m not asking,” I demanded.

“Come on, baby. Help Mama to bed,” Adria groaned, standing to her feet.

Sky’s hand swiped across her face as she wrapped herself in Adria’s arm, walking her across the room and upstairs. I thought I was calm enough to have this conversation until I entered our bedroom. Sky was sitting on the edge of the bed as I leaned against the dresser.

The silence was killing Sky, so she decided to take the lead. “I’m sorry.”

“We’re past sorry. Why the fuck are you giving that nigga money?”

“I don’t know.”

Shaking my head, I caused her to sit upright, “Don’t bullshit me, Sky. You overthink everything. If you gave him the money, you know why.”

“It was stupid. I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes, I do, but what choice did I have? If I didn’t, he said,” she choked on her own emotions. “He said he would tell you all the things I’ve done. Things I’m not proud of, and I couldn’t let that happen, so I gave him the money. It’s not like I need it anyway,” she ranted. The longer she talked, the more confident she became because, somehow, hearing her words out loud made sense to her. There was a problem, and Sky solved it.

“Do you really think I give a fuck what Marcus has to say?”

Sky paused, shaking her head because she felt like I was confused. “I’ve done terrible things. Things I’m not proud of. Things I wish I could take back, but I can’t. I have to live with that, but I can’t live with you looking at me differently.”

“That’s the fuckin’ problem. We’re one Sky, so I have to live with it, too. I have been living with it even if I didn’t know why. You’ve been a fuckin’ mess! Whenever I ask, you shoot me down like I’m crazy when I know you better than you know yourself. You’re so used to lame-ass niggas who don’t handle business that it didn’t cross your mind for a second to pull your man in. Your future husband handles shit for a living, but you’re still thinking I instead of we. I guess that’s why we still haven’t set a fuckin’ wedding date.”

Sky’s shoulders sagged, leaving her saddened at the idea of me questioning her love for me. Deep down, I knew Sky loved me. I knew she wanted to be here, but her actions said otherwise, and I wasn’t walking into a marriage on shaky ground. No offense to Ty, but I watched him do that with Kyerra, and they were still trying to find their footing. I didn’t want that chaos in my life. Most importantly, I wouldn’t do that to Cam.

“I warned Marcus, but you’ve been letting that nigga play with you. With Cam. Most importantly, with me, like he’s running shit.” Sky’s brows furrowed, trying to read between the lines because, at this point, I was so mad I was rambling. “That shit is coming to an end.”

“What do you mean? What is coming to an end?”

“Whatever I fuckin’ decide.” I snapped, causing Sky’s neck to twist.

“Then say it! There’s no need to play games and dance around the truth. What are you going to do?” Sky demanded, but by now, I was exhausted from dragging her drunk mother out of a bar and now having this conversation.

“You’re the last person to say shit to me about playing games. You’ve played enough with your Baby Daddy.”

“Stop fuckin’ calling him that!” Sky yelled because we had traded places. My tone had returned to its usual mellow cadence while she was livid.

“That’s what he is, right?”

Our words were swords clashing, each sentence a battleground. Just as the intensity peaked, Cam materialized in the doorway. It was as if God knew I was about to do something irrational. So he woke up the only person who could stop me tonight. I wasn’t sure what trick God would use tomorrow or the day after, but he would need one to keep me off Marcus.

“Mack Attack,” Cam yawned, rubbing her eyes in the doorway. “You woke me up.”

The weight of her gaze halted our words, forcing a momentary pause. In that silence, I recognized the need for restraint, aware of the impact our discord could have on her. Sky walked into the bathroom because her face was red and her eyes puffy from crying tears, and she didn’t want Cam to notice.

“I’m sorry, Cam Cam.”
