“My bad. It’s been crazy.”

“I’ll grab it and be right back.”

Morgan stood before the display case, admiring a diamond watch. My fingers tapped the counter, anxious to see my design come to life. When Sonja returned, her stride had an extra bounce, like she was getting married.

“It came out better than I thought,” she expressed, unwrapping the cloth and handing it over.

Holding it up for inspection, I had to agree. The quality of the diamonds was impeccable and worth every penny.

“A fuckin’ ring!” Morgan exclaimed over my shoulder.

“Keep your voice down.”

“You’re proposing to her?” Morgan tried to ask in a hushed tone but his excitement missed the memo.

“Do you two need a moment?” Sonja asked, picking up on the tension.

“No, I’m good,” I declined.

The floral clusters along the band were designed with a unique variety of mixed shapes because Solana wasn’t like anyone I had ever met. Her ring needed to be as unique as she was, so I opted for a pink diamond in the center. Pink was Solana’s favorite color in true princess form.

“So, what do you think?” Sonja asked because I had yet to share my thoughts on our collaboration.

“It’s fire.”

Morgan walked away, likely shocked because, much like everybody else close to me, they assumed it would be Bella on the receiving end when this day came. For a while, I thought so, too, but life didn’t work out that way.

“I don’t know what you have planned, but please include a videographer. I need to see her reaction in real-time.”

“I’ll see what I can do. Thanks for everything, Sonja.”

“It’s my pleasure. Good luck,” she smiled while bagging the ring up so we could head out.

Sonja handed the bag over, and I walked to the side of the store where Morgan was staring at a bracelet. He got tired of pretending and finally led the way outside to the car. Much like in the store, he didn’t say much. I could tell he thought about it a few times but decided against it.

I’m sure he had plenty to say, but none of it would change my mind. So, I embraced the silent ride from the El Rodeo to the hotel. We walked inside, and Bella exhaled, thankful it wasn’t someone else. Now that she realized there was no threat, she instantly began complaining.

“Took you long enough!”

“You would’ve had something to eat if you weren’t waiting on me,” I fussed, setting the bag down on the table.

Bella sucked her teeth and shuffled over to the table.

“Y’all still left me here alone. Anything could’ve happened to me.”

Bella was doing what she did best—be dramatic. We said we would keep her safe, but I wasn’t at her beck and call.

“But it didn’t,” Morgan said, falling into the armchair behind him.

“Shut up!” Bella rolled up her middle finger because they always fought like brother and sister. “What did you have to do that was so important anyway?”

Morgan coughed up a laugh, anticipating my response because he knew the truth would send Bella into a rage.

“For somebody so hungry, you’re doing more talking than eating,” I pointed out.

“Since when can’t I ask questions?”

“You can ask what you want. It’s not my job to answer.”
