“Good, that’s my job.”

“What’s my job?” Cam asked.

“To be my princess. Duh.”

Her hands fled to her mouth, laughing like I had told the funniest joke.

“Can the princess have pasta for dinner?”

“Of course. You can get whatever you want.”

“Hmm, what about a dog!”

“You gotta clear that one with Mommy.”

“But I’m the princess.” She pouted, crossing her arms from the booster seat.

Shaking my head, I was in for hell when she became a teenager. I couldn’t tell Cam no to save my life, and Sky was going to kick my ass. The way I saw it, if I planned on taking something from Cam, I needed to replace it with something else, so I caved.

“I’ll get you a dog.”

“Really? Thanks, Mack Attack!”

“You’re welcome, Cam Cam.”

I wasn’t sure how to convince Sky to let her have a dog, but I’d find a way. My girl was in the back seat way too excited running down a list of names for her dog. After we picked up pasta from her favorite restaurant, I took her home. I told Sky I forgot her ice cream so I could get back out the door without her being too suspicious.

Sky: Hey, where are you?

Me: On my way.

Sky: Okay.

Me: How is Cam?

Sky: She’s hyped up on ice cream and pasta, so she’s great.

Me: Good.

Sitting across the street from Ember’s apartment, I could’ve easily run in her shit and dragged Marcus out. From what I could see, she had just fallen for the wrong nigga, just like Sky.

It had my blood boiling watching him carefully walk over to a brand-new car with thirty-day tags, likely courtesy of Sky’s investment. Marcus opened the door for Ember and then helped Alaina climb in the backseat. He showed more care and concern for her daughter than his own. Cam deserved better, and seeing this only solidified my decision. Marcus had to go.

Chapter Twenty-Two

As the morning sun painted hues of warmth across my room, I reluctantly surfaced from the depths of a dream. The soft melody of my favorite song played, prompting me to fumble for my phone on the nightstand. With a groggy stretch and a yawn, I blinked away the remnants of dreams and answered the persistent call.

“Hello,” I groaned.

“Where is Quest?” I wasn’t familiar with the deep voice yelling at me, but the intense urgency underscored his words, conveying heightened importance. My brain was finally awake enough to recognize it and why he was so frantic.

Morgan.

Throwing my arm to the opposite side of the bed, it hit nothing but the comforter. Usually, Quest would’ve been lying next to me with one arm tucked behind his head. That’s how I knew when he was in a deep slumber. The emptiness and Morgan’s tone caused me to sit up.

“Solana, where is he?”

“I-I-I don’t know,” I replied, pulling the phone from my ear to check my messages. There hadn’t been anything from Quest since he told me he would be home soon.
