And then the man collapses on top of me, totally spent.

And my hands trace down his back muscles as he nuzzles my neck and whispers sweet things into my ear until I finally drift off to sleep.

I rest my head on the doctor’s toned chest and listen to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. It feels so damn good to be touching like this – being together like this. Skin-to-skin. My own heartbeat slows.

August runs his hand slowly through my hair. I close my eyes and just take in all the pleasant physical sensations.

“Your patient is not the only one having an operation tomorrow,” I whisper.

“What do you mean?” August asks, his voice low and quiet. He’s clearly relaxed now. I like that I’ve been able to calm him down.

“My mom has got one tomorrow,” I admit.

“An operation?” he asks.

“Yeah. It’s scary.”

“Oh. Is she going to be okay?”

“I think so. I’ll be there.”

“I can swing by and check up on her if you want,” August whispers. “I’ll come and find you.”

“It’s okay,” I reply. “She won’t want the fuss.”

“You let me know how it goes, okay? I want to be there for you. Always.”

“Will do,” I whisper back as I start to drift to the deepest and most relaxed sleep I’ve had for a very, very long time.

EMMA

The weirdest sound jolts me awake in August’s bed. It’s something loud, and something I don’t normally hear in normal life. My ears burn with the sound.

Wait... what is that?

It can’t be...

Yes, it is.

It’s the whirl of the blades of a helicopter.

A helicopter landing on August’s helipad above his bedroom.

I lie in bed in surprise as someone clearly parks the aircraft above us. Someone has just arrived here at August’s penthouse via air. I honestly thought his helipad addition and his throwaway comment that it’s for visitors as a joke, but now it seems so very real.

Who could it be?

Thankfully, next to me in the bed, August finally stirs just as the helicopter stops spinning. He can deal with this.

He turns to me.

“I know who that’ll be,” he says soberly. He’s naked. His muscular arms pull down the silk bed covers, revealing his toned torso. “There’s only one person...”

I don’t like the look on his face as he says that.
