All because of my actions.

I am such a brat, aren’t I?

I always do this. I’m always the reason behind shit happening. I can’t just sit quietly and let Mom work and not snoop around.

I just had to get caught and ruin this job for Mom.

I had to get her fired...

Yet again, Alda falls silent. Mom stares at her, still so evidently scared.

“You want a second chance?” the Penmayne matriarch asks Mom.

“Yes, please.”

I pray to whatever god might be listening to have mercy on us – to not allow Mom and I to be kicked out of this mansion on our asses. I pray that, if we are given another lifeline, I promise to always remain a good girl.

“I do not give out second chances,” Alda says slowly and deeply. “Not usually. But you and your daughter are lucky today. I am in a rare charitable mood, and so you will be receiving a second chance.”

Mom practically bows. “Thank you, Mrs. Penmayne.”

Alda takes in a sharp breath. “Make sure this never happens again. There will be no more chances, you got that?”

She spins around again and leaves, gliding past me without even a glance in my direction.

In her absence, Waylen Penmayne’s office is eerily quiet.

And Mom’s attention shoots to me.

I look at her.

She looks at me.

We stare at each other for a long while.

I want the earth to swallow me up, and all my shame.

And then Mom speaks, breaking the quiet.

“Close the door, Emma, and then sit down. We need to talk.”

Oh. Crap.

This is deep trouble.

And it’s all my fault.

EMMA

This is the most serious and upset, that I have ever seen Mom.

And it kills me that it’s all my fault.

“Please sit down, Emma,” she says.

Her voice is abnormally commanding and stern. It scares me even more than when Alda busted me downstairs.
