Ethan beams at me with his lovable cheeky grin.
“Much better than before,” he replies.
“Better? Well, I hope so, because I have a gift for you. Something that you’ll like more than a ballet.”
The boy’s eyes light up.
“What?” he asks.
I reach into my pocket and pull out a piece of paper. I hand it to him.
“What does that say?” I ask him. “Go ahead and read it.”
I watch as Ethan takes a moment to scan through the paper. His face somehow lights up even more.
“No way,” he whispers.
I nod.
“Yep. You and me, how about that?”
“Yes, doctor.”
“Just call me August, Ethan.”
He leaps at me, wrapping his arms tight around my shoulders. I can feel his strength. New strength that has come to him since the operation. He truly is on the mend.
My little superhero.
I’ve just handed him tickets for a basketball game. Courtside seats for him and me. Just as I promised him I would get him.
I notice Emma is watching me with a look on her face.
I know that expression.
It’s love.

I turn to look at Emma as we sit and watch Swan Lake. She is enraptured by the performance. Her eyes are transfixed on the stage. It’s adorable.
I lean over to her.
“What do you think?” I ask her.
Emma’s mouth hangs open.
“It’s...amazing.”
I nod over to the seats beside her – at Ethan and Faith.
“Look at them,” I whisper. “They’re holding hands.”
Emma turns to look at the two kids, and then she smiles at me.
“They’re so cute,” she says.
I take her hand.
