August is unfazed. “So I can do this.”

And, without waiting for my response, he leans down purposefully and kisses me softly on the lips. His touch sends hot sparks flying through me. My own heart performs a delicate ballet inside my chest as we touch for the very first time.

Time stands still.

I’m frozen to the spot.

He’s kissing me. He’s kissing me. He’s kissing me.

* * *

My first kiss.

Around me, there is a tumultuous ocean of emotions but, right now in this very moment when August Penmayne kisses me, I experience nothing but total, blissful calmness.

And then, as soon as it begins, it ends. August quickly breaks our kiss. Our lips part, and it’s a killer blow.

And he’s walking away from me before I have a chance to stop him. To ask him what the hell that was about. To ask him if he liked that nearly as much as I liked it...

I am so confused. By everything. By this house. By this crazy billionaire family. By him.

Do I actually like him? Has he charmed the socks off me? Am I going crazy for a Penmayne boy – the actual freaking son of my mother’s insane arrogant boss?

He’s gone, though. Just like he always does – disappearing on me.

Talking about Alda, I can hear the familiar, unmistakable sounds of her Italian high heels marching down the hallway outside the door like alarm bells made from shotguns. It’s as real as anything.

My heart is in my throat as I realize I’m about to be discovered for the second time today.

I panic.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

And I run. I sprint out of the room and down the hallway in the opposite direction of the clacking heels. The last thing I need is the Penmayne matriarch catching me once again – especially in the same room - then Mom and I would surely be completely fucked.

I duck around a corner just in time. Alda comes storming past the movie room. As I take in deep breaths, trying to calm myself, I hear her opening the movie room door and stepping in.

I close my eyes and let out a long sigh of relief.

I’m safe.

Most important of all, though – does what just happened mean that August Penmayne actually likesme?

EMMA

My old ballet shoes finally break, and it happens not just anywhere, but at Irina’s ballet class. Right in the middle of the practice. And it doesn’t happen on any day of the year, but on my birthday. In front of everyone.

CRACK!

There is an audible snap as they break mid-song, and undoubtedly everyone in the room hears and sees it happen.

I stumble on my feet.

My cheeks go red. My heart skips a beat.

Next to me is my old nemesis, Britney. Shedefinitelyhears and sees it all happen. And she laughs.Oh, how she laughs. She stops her routine just to point me out to the rest of the class and she is bending over forward cartoonishly with her mocking laughter.
