“Doctor August, do you think I’ll really be a superhero?”

I turn around to face Ethan again. I really do try to ignore all the machines around his bedside.

“You already are one, Ethan.”

The boy smiles.

“I want to fly with the stars,” he says. “Do you think that will happen?”

“Anything can happen, Ethan. You are a superhero who deserves the world and all the stars that hang in the night sky.”

Click, click.

I unlock my car as I march toward it in the hospital parking lot. I’m ready for a tiresome drive back to my penthouse. I’ve been looking forward to a well-needed long hot shower all shift.

But then I see her.

Emma Tucker leaning against my car.

Waiting for me.

And, as always, she is stunning.

Even in a dimly lit parking lot.

“How did you know that’s mine?” I ask her when I reach my vehicle.

Emma glances at the sports car and then back at me.

“It’s a fancy European car,” she replies. “And it’s the only one in this parking lot. It is practically a shining beacon telling everyone in the world it belongs to you. A Penmayne is easy to spot.”

“Ah. But you’re not waiting by my car to merely compliment my choice of vehicle, aren’t you, Emma? It’s not as simple as that. There is something else, isn’t there?”

She rolls her eyes and stands up, away from my shiny car.

“Okay, August,” she replies. “You can take me out to dinner and apologize properly.”

I let out a cheeky, knowing smirk.

“Sothat’swhy you were waiting for me.”

“I’m expecting a good apology,” she says. “And a free dinner. At a good restaurant as well.”

“Give me your address,” I reply. “I’ll pick you up in three hours.”

EMMA

August arrives at mine exactly three hours later from our little rendezvous in the hospital parking lot – exactly right at the time he promised he would show up.

The man is punctual, at the very least. That’s one promise he hasn’t broken.

Sometimes I feel like I’ve been just a tad too harsh on the man, but then I’m reminded of what he did – or more specifically, what hedidn’tdo – to Mom and me, and I instantly flip to being angry with him all over again.

This better be one good apologetic dinner...
