“That’s strange.”

“Why?” I ask her.

“Because it seems like your doctor likes to go on alotof dates.”

I stop scrubbing and turn to face my best friend.

“What do you mean?” I ask her.

Diana fishes for her phone hidden deep in her uniform. She pulls up something and thrusts the screen in my face for a closer look. It takes me a moment to understand what exactly she is showing me.

It’s a social media post, done by some online influencer called Octavia Beaumont.

More specifically, it’s a photo.

A photo of August. He’s holding hands with some stunning blonde woman who looks a million bucks in the flesh. They’re both standing in front of some mansion posing for the cameras.

Oh, wow.

“May I?” I ask Diana, pointing at her phone.

“Sure.”

I take the device and scroll around on the profile of Octavia Beaumont. She’s some big socialite in the upper crust of the city – that’s probably why I have never heard of her. But apparently nearly five million people have. She’s got one hell of a following on here.

What’s she doing with August, though?

Reading the caption and the comments underneath the photo, it doesn’t take me long to figure out.

They’ve gone on a date to some cool exclusive party. They’ve been photographed by paparazzi. Their photo has splashed across the tabloids and on Octavia’s social media feed.

A whole other world...

I’m surprised by my reaction to the photo - I’m actuallysad. I know I really shouldn’t be, though. August is his own man and can do whatever the hell he wants, especially with influencers with money and power. We’re not dating. We haven’t dated in freakingyears. The other night was a simple dinner with an apology attached – a sincere one, but nothing that would go any further. It meant nothing. August can really do whatever he wants.

There is absolutely no need for August and me to ever speak again.

But I still feel...somethingwhen I see him with another woman.

It can’t be jealously, surely?

“Are you okay?” Diana asks me, taking the phone out of my hands. I realize I’m shaking. I can’t control myself.

“I’m fine,” I lie to my best friend.

“Are you really okay?” she asks. “You look like you’re going to be sick.”

“Yeah, it’s the cleaning and all the chemicals,” I lie again. “It’s not good for my lungs.”

“I’m sorry you had to see that stupid photo,” Diana says softly. “I know you have a history with him. I thought you’d have given him a piece of your mind at the dinner.”

“I did,” I reply. “I got an apology from him. I got to say everything I’ve been meaning to say.”

“So you’ve moved on? No more thinking about August?”

“One hundred percentnot.”

“That’s good.”
