I remember what Victor said to me –we are Penmaynes.

We stick together. The whole world can be against us sometimes, so what do we have other than family?

It’s good to keep Mother happy.

I have a sinking feeling that I will be going on this date with Octavia.

I sit down next to Diana with one of the hospital’s crap coffees in a to-go cup warming my fingers.

“How are you feeling?” Diana asks me.

“Yeah. Fine.”

She raises an eyebrow.

“Really?”

“Yes, Diana. I am fine.”

“Seen Doctor Penmayne around recently?” she asks.

“Nope.”

“Do youwantto see him around?”

“Nope.”

“Ah. Gotcha,” Diana says. “So you’re trying to avoid him?”

“I want nothing to do with him,” I reply, almost with a growl. “He betrayed me. He left Mom and me to fend for ourselves on our own. And then he’s popped up in my life years later. He apologized at that dinner, and that’s it. I think it’s time for all of us to move on and forget about the past. It’s done. He and I are done. It’s all good.”

“Sounds pretty final,” Diana remarks.

I take a sip of the coffee and instantly regret it.

“Yep. Pretty damn final.Yuck, this stuff truly is shit.”

For the briefest of moments, I consider telling Diana about the upcoming dance school audition – and all my fears around it – but I firmly decide against it.

Holy crap, that audition is tomorrow.

It’s no longer upcoming, it’s practicallyhere. Staring me in the face. Causing me to be absolutely terrified.

Yeah, better not tell a soul about it.

I look up at the clock on the staffroom wall. My break is – somehow – already over. Almost as soon as it began.

Here we go. Back to work.

I hand Diana my coffee.

“Here, have this,” I say as I rise from my seat. “It’s a gift.”

“Yeah, the worst gift in the world.”
