Emma kisses me back.
And it’s like everything finally feels...right.
She tastes the same as I remember - that softness - that gentleness - that spark that connects us.
It is so damnright.
“You’ve kissed me?” she asks.
It’s not a statement, and it’s not really a question.
“I kissed you,” I reply. “And you kissed back.”
“I did,” she says, her voice wavering.
“And it was kind of spontaneous,” I whisper to her. “Kissing you was the last thing I was expecting to do just then, but it felt like it needed to be done.”
Emma smiles. A genuine smile. It’s the first time I’ve seen her really smile at me for a very long time, and it’s enough to make me feel so weak inside.
“I liked it,” she whispers back. “Yes, it needed to be done. You needed to kiss me.”
We look deep into each other’s eyes for a very pleasurable while. It’s a comfortable silence, here, outside the hospital and away from anyone else. Here, we are no longer doctor and cleaner - here, we are simply Emma and August and the memories of two teenagers in love.
“Are you truly okay?” I eventually ask her.
Emma then hugs me tight. Her arms wrap around me and don’t let go.
I hold her for a long time. It feels even more right than the kiss. I feel like I’m finally home. Touching her makes my heart rate drop, and all my stresses evaporate.
And I can just be...me.
And I can feel the same from Emma. She’s at peace as well. It’s like our bodies were made to hold each other. It’s just a shame that it’s been too long.
Way too long...
And again, we fall into a comfortable silence.
And then she finally speaks.
“I’ve given up on my dreams, August.”
She’s talking into my chest. Her words fall gently from her mouth. She’s sad. Vulnerable. Exposed. And she wants me to comfort her.
I would comfort her every day if it meant I could hold her like this for eternity.
“Dance school?” I ask her.
“Yes.”
