And he gave it to her repeatedly throughout the night.

Chapter Seven

The sun was barely up when Ashlynn rolled over and found herself alone.

What the…?

Slowly she sat up, brushing her hair out of her face, and looked around. The clock showed it was six-thirty and she knew that they had talked about making breakfast together, but…it would be hard to do that if she were by herself.

“Reid?” she called out.

A minute later, he walked into the room with a tray carrying two mugs and what looked like some fruit and muffins. “Sorry. I thought you’d still be sleeping. I planned on being back in the bed before you woke up.”

Carefully, he placed the tray on the bed before taking off his robe and climbing back in beside her. “When did you get the muffins?”

“Don’t be too impressed, I got them yesterday. I warmed them up, but they’re still not fresh.”

Leaning in, she kissed him softly. “That’s quite alright. I know they’re still going to be delicious.”

They had to be a little cautious about how they moved so the coffee wouldn’t spill and ultimately took their mugs and put them on the bedside tables. Then they shifted the pillows so they could sit up more comfortably and enjoy their breakfast.

“Did you sleep okay?” he asked.

“Mmm…you mean once we finally were too exhausted to move?” she teased. “Then yes.”

He kissed the top of her head. “Good. So, what would you like to do today?”

“Would it be wrong to say more of this?”

Chuckling, he asked, “You mean eating in bed? I think that could be arranged.”

“Not that,” she replied, laughing with him. “I mean, I wouldn’t say no to it, but I was referring more to the two of us sort of staying in bed all day.”

His smile was downright lethal when he looked at her. “That can definitely be arranged.”

They ate quietly and Ashlynn was halfway through her coffee when she asked, “So why firefighting? What made you want to be a fireman?”

“You know, it was just something I became fascinated with all the way back to kindergarten. We went on one of those field trips to the firehouse and I was just in awe of everything they showed us. No one else in my family was a fireman so I can’t say I was taking after anyone; it was just…it clicked with me. Everything I did was with the intention of going into the field.”

“Wow. That’s very impressive.”

“What about you? When did you decide to go into cosmetology?”

Shifting against the pillows, she rested her head on his shoulder. “First, thank you for not making it sound like a bullshit career.”

“Um…”

“I’m a little sensitive about it because sometimes people look at me like I must have done this because I wasn’t a good student or not smart enough to do anything else. I’ve always been more artistic than studious, and something about hair and makeup just appealed to me. I didn’t really give it any serious thought until my senior year of high school.”

“Not everyone knows at an early age what they want to be. There’s no crime in that.”

“I know, but…Billie was working in finance and is kind of brilliant with numbers, Levi was making a name for himself in advertising, Chloe has always wanted to be a teacher, and I was floundering a little. I was almost embarrassed to tell my mom what I wanted to go to school for because all of my siblings were doing big things.”

“And what did she say when you told her?”

“She smiled at me and said she couldn’t wait to come to the salon I was going to open one day.” She paused and thought about how the two of them hadn’t really talked in a while, and it made her sad.

“Hey,” Reid said quietly. “You okay?”
