Palmer

How could I forget that Alice wants me to attend their book club meeting? Of course, rather than picking up the phone like a normal person, she decided to ambush me at the cabin. Calista needs to get the key away from her. Luckily, Alice bought my excuse that my car wouldn’t start so I was driving Hudson’s truck and still had to get mine towed to the shop.

“I love you, Palmer, but I’m not going to Northern Lights,” Hudson says while browning up the meat for tacos that night.

“Come on. I never ask anything of you.”

With raised eyebrows, he glances at me at the kitchen table.

“Fine, but what if they talk about the sex scenes? I can’t deal with that on my own.” I finish my read-through of my latest chapters and send them to my editor then shut my laptop.

I get up from the table and peek in on Adley. She’s playing with her toys, pretending she’s cooking in the little toy kitchen Hudson got her.

With her being distracted, I walk over and wrap my arms around Hudson, one of my hands venturing south and grabbing his dick through his jeans.

“I’ll repay you. On my knees,” I whisper in his ear.

“Using all the tactics, huh?” He seasons the ground beef. “I’m going to make sure you make good on that promise.”

“Mommy!” Adley comes in, and I rush away from Hudson, but she stands there and stares at us. “Why are you touching Daddy?”

Hudson is no help, turning around and biting his lip. He glances at me from the corner of his eye, probably about to laugh.

I was just hugging Daddy.

Her face twists. “Theresa hugged Daddy.”

Oh? I act surprised.

“I didn’t like it.”

I have no idea how to react. Sorry? I sign to buy time.

She comes over and hands me a Barbie. “I can’t get it on.”

Thank God she’s moved on to a new topic, but I hate these Barbie clothes. How do they expect a little girl to dress the doll when a grown adult can barely even do it?

“Barbie wants to go dance, but Ken said no.” Her facial expression makes a laugh bubble up out of me.

“Why would he do that?” I ask aloud since my hands are occupied with this stupid doll. I loosen the sleeve of the dress to slide up Barbie’s plastic arm.

“Because he likes Skipper’s Mommy.”

My hands stop, and I give Hudson a help expression. He ignores it and continues to cook the meat.

“Oh, well, maybe they can go together.”

Hudson coughs out a laugh.

“Daddy broke Theresa.”

Barbie drops from my hands.

“Mommy!” Adley bends down and picks up the doll. “Now Barbie has to go to the doctor.” She walks out of the room, and I bury my head in my hands.

Hudson releases his laugh. “Way to break Barbie, Mommy.”

“Shut up.” I playfully punch his bicep. “You were no help.”
