Sliding his phone into his pocket, he closed the hatch and got behind the wheel. He buckled his own seat belt and headed out of the hospice parking lot onto the busy street. Then his heart stopped cold.

As cold as the barrel of the gun that was now pressed to his head.

He heard Siggy growling, but only barely because his head was filled with the sound of his own heart, which was suddenly pounding. His vision started to go wavy. He blinked hard and began pulling over, but the gun was jammed harder into his head.

“Drive, Dr. Reeves,” Roxanne said. “And don’t even think of calling for help or you’ll watch your friend die. Call off your dog.”

Because Siggy was growling loudly now.

Sam swallowed. “Down, boy. Down. Good boy,” he added when Siggy’s head disappeared behind the back seat. Where Roxanne had been hiding.

Dammit.

“Give me the letter, Georgia,” Roxanne demanded. “I was watching you through the lobby window. I saw you put it in your purse.”

Georgia drew a deep breath. “Roxanne?” she asked, her voice trembling. “What are you doing?”

Roxanne huffed impatiently. “Don’t even try to look confused. Eloise could pull it off, but you can’t. Give me the letter.”

“Give it to her,” Sam murmured.

Georgia handed it over without further argument.

Sam kept driving, looking around for any possible way to signal for help. But no one was looking at them. Everyone was busy tending to their own lives.

“How did you know about the letter?” Sam asked evenly, even though he thought he might throw up.

“I found the file on Flynn’s laptop,” she answered, her tone managing to be bored, smug, and irritated, all at once. “ ‘Dear Georgia,’ ” she mocked. “ ‘If you’re reading this, I’m dead.’ ”

“When did you find the file?” Sam asked. “Before or after you killed him?”

“After. He…interrupted my search.”

“He caught you stealing his computer that night, didn’t he?” Georgia asked coldly. “The night of Eloise’s birthday party.”

“That he did.” Roxanne snorted. “I actually believed him, you know? I thought he had the hots for me. But then Kent Crawford told me to be careful, that he was a retired cop, so I stole his laptop and imagine my surprise. Is this the only copy?”

“Yes,” Georgia lied without hesitation.

Go, Georgia. Sam nearly laughed, but it would have been entirely hysterical and he managed to hold it in. He was not going to show Roxanne any weakness.

“Why were you following us?” Sam demanded with more courage than he actually felt.

“To get the letter. Flynn hadn’t emailed it to Georgia, so I knew he must have printed out a copy. But he couldn’t have given it to Georgia yet, or McKittrick would have arrested me days ago. So I followed you all. Georgia never left the home anymore. Only to go out to McKittrick’s parents’ house for dinner that night, but again McKittrick didn’t arrest me, so I knew Georgia still hadn’t read it. Then the two of you left today and…” She laughed quietly. “I guess I just got lucky.”

“That’s why you came into my apartment that night,” Georgia said. “You were looking for the letter.”

“Well, it wasn’t for the tea,” Roxanne said sarcastically. “I knew you hadn’t read it yet because neither of you two can hide what you’re feeling. You’re better than he is, though,” she said to Georgia. “The good doctor wears his emotions on his face.”

“You won’t be able to just walk away,” Sam said, attempting to reason with the woman. “McKittrick suspects you.”

“No shit,” Roxanne snapped. “But without this letter, she has nothing on me. Just a lot of what-ifs.”

No, Sam thought. Kit took that coffee cup with your lipstick print for a reason. She knows something. That was hard evidence. Sam didn’t know why it was important, but Kit did. It was a comforting thought. Even if Roxanne managed to kill him and Georgia, Kit would make her pay.

“How did you break into Frankie’s laptop?” Sam asked.

In the mirror, Roxanne rolled her eyes. “His password was Ryan-ten-thirty-one-oh-eight.”
