“She let herself into Georgia’s room two nights ago.”

“She was looking for the letter? Or she wanted to kill Georgia, too?”

Kit swallowed. “Either. Maybe both.” She stalked over to Jackie Beaton and crouched down, getting in the woman’s face. “Did Roxanne find a letter from Frankie Flynn to Georgia Shearer?”

Jackie’s eye twitched, but she said nothing. Kit took that as a yes.

“She’s going to kill Georgia Shearer, isn’t she?”

This time Jackie couldn’t hide her reaction. One side of her mouth tipped up in a vile little smirk. But she still said nothing.

She didn’t have to.

Kit rubbed her forehead. Think.

Goddard crouched beside her. “How can I help?”

“I don’t know.” She leaned close to Jackie again. “If she hurts that old lady and the man with her, there won’t be anywhere she can hide. I will find her.”

Needing to move, Kit got up and paced back to Connor, who was on his phone. Goddard followed.

“You don’t know when they’ll be back?” Connor asked, then climbed into the SWAT van and beckoned Kit and Goddard to join him.

Goddard closed the doors, giving the three of them privacy.

Connor put his phone on speaker. “Miss Eloise, I’ve got Detectives McKittrick and Goddard with me. We need to find Sam and Georgia. Can you track Georgia’s phone?”

“No. I wouldn’t know how, even if she’d allow it.” Eloise’s voice cracked with worry. “Are they all right? Is it Roxanne? Has she hurt them?”

Kit injected a smile into her voice for Eloise’s benefit. This stress couldn’t be good for the elderly woman. “We’re looking for them now.”

Eloise’s gulp was audible. “She’s after them, isn’t she?”

“We don’t know that,” Kit said, trying to soothe. “They went to visit Frankie’s ex-wife. They could still be there.”

Connor shook his head. I checked, he mouthed. They signed out at six forty-five.

So in between the second and third calls, Kit thought. Those sounds of traffic on the fourth call were even more ominous now. But Sam’s fourth call had come through at six fifty-five, less than fifteen minutes before. They couldn’t have gotten too far.

“They went to a hospice center,” Eloise was saying sadly. “I know. They asked if I wanted to go, but…I don’t like those places. I stayed here with Officer Stern.”

“I’m here, Detective,” Stern said. “I might have a suggestion. This is a total long shot, but…Dr. Reeves has his dog with him.”

“Siggy,” Kit said. “How does that help?”

“Oh!” Eloise said. “I get it! Siggy’s a runner and Sammy was worried that he’d run away and get lost. He got him one of those GPS collars.”

“If we could track that…,” Stern said with a note of hope in his voice.

“Okay,” Kit said again. “Let me make some calls. Stern, please stay with Miss Eloise. And make sure the officer in the front lobby knows to watch for Roxanne Beaton.”

“Yes, ma’am. Will do.”

Kit ended the call and stared at Connor, her thoughts whirling.

Connor’s jaw tightened. “We’d need to find Sam’s phone to track the dog’s collar.”

“Does he have a dog walker?” Goddard suggested. “Maybe they’d have access to the tracker.”
