Roxanne lifted her cup with a sigh. “May their memory be a blessing.”

They finished their tea in what was now a subdued silence. Nurse Roxanne rinsed her cup and set it in the sink. “Call me when you want the dishes done, Miss Georgia. I’ll come and do them for you or I’ll send Devon to help.”

“Thank you,” Georgia said graciously.

Sam hid a smile behind his cup, knowing that Georgia’s tone meant that she’d ask for help on a cold day in hell.

Roxanne pulled a blood pressure cuff from the pocket of her scrubs. “Let me take your BP and then I’ll be on my way.”

Georgia obediently stuck out her arm, patiently waiting as Roxanne took her vitals, then pouring herself another cup of tea when her numbers proved good.

“Good night,” Roxanne said. “I’ll see you Thursday or Friday. I’m on days for the rest of the week.”

“I hope your next assignment is less chaotic than this one has been,” Georgia said, and Roxanne smiled ruefully.

“I have to say this is the most drama I’ve ever experienced on a job. But I still enjoyed being here and meeting you all. Thank you for the tea.”

She closed the door and Sam sighed. “I was ready to smack her on the head with that ugly statue on your table.”

Georgia rolled her eyes. “Would have been fitting. Roxanne turned up her nose at my statue when she thought I wasn’t looking.”

Ah. There was the snarky Georgia he knew and loved. He’d been a little worried because she’d been so polite all evening. She’d even let Eloise watch an abbreviated version of Magic Mike, fast-forwarding through most of the movie until she got to the “good parts.”

Sam looked over his shoulder at the statue. “It is ugly, Miss Georgia.”

It was a fertility statue of some kind, with overly exaggerated genitalia.

“I know, but I love it and it comes with a good memory. I got that on a photo safari in Africa. It’s not real, of course. Just a replica. But I think Roxanne was appalled by the exposed dangly bits.”

Sam choked on his tea. “You can’t make me laugh like that.”

She pounded his back. “You’ll survive.”

“I don’t know about that. Dangly bits?” Shaking his head, Sam drained his cup, then gathered the dishes, loading them into the dishwasher before putting the rest of the cookies away.

“You don’t have to do that, Sam.”

Sam got a dog treat for Siggy from his overnight bag. “I didn’t want you giving Siggy any more cookies. It’ll bother his gut and nobody wants that.”

She made a face. “On that note, I’m going back to bed. I hate to take sleeping pills, but I need something. I’ll never fall asleep with Eloise’s snoring.” One silver brow lifted. “I’m going to record her with my phone for future use.”

Sam lifted a brow. “Blackmail, Georgia? Really?”

Georgia grinned a little evilly. “Really. We don’t become nice just because we become old, Sam.”

“Good night, Georgia.”

Sam turned off the lights and went back to the sofa bed, Siggy on his heels. He was sure he wouldn’t sleep a wink on that uncomfortable bed, but that was all right.

He could sleep soundly when everyone was safe.

Kit slid a cup of coffee in front of Jeff Mansfield, who looked as if he’d been working all night. “Any luck getting through that encryption?”

Jeff looked up, his eyes bloodshot. “No. You’re going to question Adler, right?”
