“I can’t thank you enough for taking care of the dogs,” I say to him once Savannah and I are securely in the house.

“Not a problem. They’ll be safe and well-loved until you can come back for them.”

Savannah bites her bottom lip. “I’m going to miss them so much.”

“I know, baby.” I touch her cheek. “But they’re in good hands.”

“What if someone sees you coming here?” Savannah asks. “What if…”

“No one will see me,” Leif promises. “Besides, I shouldn’t have to come back here. Falcon and I can communicate as necessary on secure lines, and you have everything you could possibly need to last for the next five years.”

“Sammy will be all grown up by then,” Savannah says, her lips in a frown.

“Vannah,” I say, “listen to me. Listen good. We will not be here for five years. I’m hoping we won’t even be here for five days.”

She scratches her arm anxiously. “You don’t understand, Falcon. I need to figure everything out. I need to figure out why my family is so adamant that I marry Miles McAllister. Why he’s so determined to marry me. Until we know that, they will continue to come after me.”

“They won’t find you here,” I say.

“How can you say that?” She grabs the sleeves of my shirt. “They know you and I are together. They know we’re in a relationship. They already sent Abel and Giancarlo to your home.”

“Which is why the safe house is not on our property.”

“Who owns this property?” she asks.

“A corporation,” I say. “A corporation that cannot be traced to me or anyone in my family.”

“To the outside world,” Leif says, “this looks like an abandoned ranch house on a small ranch surrounded by other abandoned homes.”

“A ranch that has no crops or animals,” Savannah says. “Isn’t that a huge red flag?”

“An abandoned ranch wouldn’t have any crops or animals. It’s true that there’s no evidence of them ever being here, but that’s only something we need to worry about if they come looking,” I say. “They won’t, Savannah. This place is secure. Hawk made sure when he dropped off the supplies.”

She swallows, her lips trembling. “I want to believe you.”

“Then believe me,” I say. “Because no one will come near you. Not a single person. They’ll have to get through me first.”

“And me,” Leif adds.

“You can’t be doing this,” I say to him. “You’re a newlywed. Your wife needs you.”

Leif lays a hand on my shoulder. “My wife understands. This is you and me in a foxhole, buddy,” he says. “And I won’t let you down.”

I grab Leif in a bear hug and we say our goodbyes.

“You know where I am if you need me.”

I nod. Then Leif leaves.

I grab Savannah, crush my mouth to hers?—

But she pushes me away.

“No way,” she says. “I’m covered in my own vomit. I need a shower.”
