She kissed my cheek. “Thank you.”

We stopped in front of an average-looking older home and piled out of the van.

Ava led the way and walked in the front door, where four vampires sat on the sofa watching television and drinking out of coffee mugs.

“Hi, Ava!” one guy said with a big smile that I didn’t care for. Then, he frowned when he saw us walking in after her.

“What’s going on?” he asked, standing. The other three stood as well, taking defensive stances.

“Where’s Orvis?” I asked.

Just then, he came from around the corner. He looked at Ava and seemed angry, but when he spotted us with our cuts on, he put on a polite face. “Oh, hello. What’s going on?”

“Ava’s coming with me.” I looked at her. “Go pack.”

She headed down the hallway, where I hoped there weren’t any more vampires.

“Oh, no, she’s not,” Orvis said, narrowing his eyes at me.

Shadow and Venom closed the distance between us and him.

“We’ve voted against letting you stay in the city. You need to get outta town. By sundown,” Shadow said.

“But Viper said?—”

Shadow looked at the four vamps. “Any of you wish to join the Nighthawks, you’ll come with us. If not, get the hell out.”

The four looked at Orvis, who threw them a warning look, and then back at us.

“You’ve got until Ava’s done packing to make a decision,” Venom warned.

“Get this fucking wolf out of my house,” Orvis said, sneering at Venom.

“No,” Shadow replied. “And I advise you start packing too.”

“I don’t understand. You have my word that I won’t do anything untoward. My clan and I will be on our best behavior. Let me talk to Viper…”

“No,” Shadow repeated. “This came directly from him. Your New Orleans privileges are revoked. Leave.”

“I’m in,” the one who’d smiled at Ava said, and Orvis threw him a filthy look.

“Me too,” two of the others said, a male and a female.

Ava emerged from the hall and grinned at the female. “Good choice, Car.”

The third stood frozen, staring at Orvis, then us, then back to him.

“Don’t even think about it, Oliver,” Orvis growled, and that was when I noticed the physical resemblance. They had to be brothers.

The other three scrambled to the back bedrooms to pack while we faced Orvis.

“You’re going to regret this,” he snapped, pointing down the hall where the remnants of his clan were packing to leave him.

Venom snorted. “I doubt that.”

“Did you just threaten the Nighthawks?” I asked, my arms folded over my cut.

“Fuck you. Fuck all of you.” Orvis flipped us off and used preternatural speed to leave out the back door of the residence.
