I sent emails to him for months until that attorney showed up, then I gave up. I sent him one last email when Gideon was born to let him know he had a son. I can’t live in the past and think he’ll be there when he doesn’t care.

I start loading my car with everything I can grab and then rush back into the house to put Gideon in his car seat.

Ilan

I’m sitting here trying to process her words. She emailed me. She said she told me. I left her an email address to contact me because I knew I’d change my phone number several times and burner numbers change all the time. I stopped watching the surveillance because I knew if I saw her, I’d give in and come back to her. It didn’t faze me until I got here that I was no longer on her security. Wait, she said it changed months ago. What about the attorney I hired?

I stand and realize she isn’t in the cabin. It’s quiet and cold. I turn to see the door wide open. I hear a car sputter and attempt to start. My legs are in motion, and I rush for her. She is sitting in the driver’s seat with tears rolling down her beautiful face as she slams her hand against the steering wheel. My woman.

My son.

I rip the door open. “Get the fuck in my SUV, now.” I point at it.

“No.” She jumps out and faces off with me again.

This time I press her into the side of the car as she starts yelling at me. “Little one, we are going to talk about this, but first I need to get you and my son to safety.”

That stops all her fight, but the tears are still coming down. I rub my thumb across her soft cheek.

“Stop crying. I don’t know why I didn’t get any of your emails, but someone is going to die for keeping me from you and my family.”

I lean down and kiss her soft lips before I pull back and help her move stuff to my SUV. I have Gideon buckled in when the first shot rings out and hits her car. I run for her and dive at her, taking her to the ground, as the second bullet hits right where she was standing. I pull my gun and fire a volley toward where the shots are coming from. Crouched down, we move to my vehicle. I get her inside and close the door, glad I got the bulletproof SUV that S.I. keeps on hand for when they are here. I need to find out what’s going on. A bullet hits a tire on her car, and it deflates. I’m returning fire as I move toward the driver’s door when I hear the whistle.

“Fuck,” I yell as I rip the door open and jump in.

I slam my foot on the gas. The explosion from the rocket into the side of the house causes the ass end of the SUV to rise up, but I don’t stop. Leisel screams and Gideon cries out too. Bullets pelt us, but I get my family out of there. The vehicle goes sideways, sliding across the ice when we hit the main road. I don’t stop or relax until we get to the highway and head south. I pull my second mobile and dial.

“What the fuck is going on? Leisel’s home security was shut off, and we were just attacked. Someone blew up Renee’s cabin. On top of that, Leisel said she emailed me, but none of the messages were forwarded to me.” I don’t give her a chance to respond as I keep barking out questions.

“Ilan, calm down,” Maya says, and I watch as Leisel stills next to me when she hears the female voice.

“She’s sort of related to me, so don’t worry.” I reassure Leisel as I slide a hand along her thigh.

“I’ll get Timothy and Bekah on it.”

“Have someone call Leisel’s parents and get them out of the area.”

“The bookstore,” Leisel cries out in panic.

“Fuck. I’ll go back once I get you both to safety. You are more important than that store.”

“But it’s your mother’s legacy.”

“You are my legacy. She would want you and Gideon taken care of.” I turn from the road for only a moment to look at her.

“I’ll call you back soon on this line,” Maya says. “Be careful. I can’t send a team to you, but I can see if there is some backup available in your area.”

“I’m good. I need a safe house.”

“I’ll send you a pin drop for a place in Anchorage.” Maya hangs up, and I turn to look at Leisel again, who is just staring at me as her body trembles. I want to hold her, but instead, I tell her what I can.

“I never got any emails. I swear. I would’ve dropped everything to be with you. I’ve missed you. I don’t know what’s going on, but I’ll make you safe.”

“I was attacked today outside the bookstore. He slammed my head into the door.” Her fingers move to the cut and bump on her forehead. “For months someone has been sending me letters, voice messages, and flowers.”

At the mention of flowers, I slam on the brakes. The car slides and the back end swings to the side. She grips the door with one hand and the other goes to the ceiling. I pull off the road and pause to get control of my emotions.

“Flowers? What kind?”
