Something unspoken passes between the two of us.

His gaze holds a mixture of curiosity and something resembling empathy, as if he can sense the storm raging inside of me. My face flames, and I quickly turn away.

A couple minutes later, the bartender sets another drink in front of me and at my questioning look, nods toward the corner where I know the man sits. A small smile tugs at the corners of my lips and I turn back to him, raising my glass to thank him. He cocks his head to the side while holding my gaze, and he grins.

Looks like I found my distraction.

CHAPTER TWO

DEACON

This gorgeous girl is way too fucking young for me.

With her long, dark hair and big, bright blue Disney princess eyes.

Those fucking eyes.

I was sitting here nursing a drink to wind down after a long day at the shop, minding my own damn business when I saw her come in. If I hadn’t watched Zane check her ID, I’d swear she wasn’t legal. I don’t know who she is, but she’s fucking beautiful. I’ve barely been able to take my eyes off her since she walked through the door.

I’m completely captivated by her.

An understated beauty.

I can’t help but be drawn to her, the way the ambient light in the bar softly illuminates her features, the delicate details that make her stand out.

I watched her sit alone at the bar, completely lost in her thoughts as she absentmindedly twirled a small lock of hair around her finger. For the longest time, she gazed into the depths of the glass in front of her. Then, she looked up, and of all the people in the bar tonight… she noticed me.

Her gaze locked with mine, and it hit me like a punch to the chest.

Those eyes.

Those beautiful fucking blue eyes.

They reflected the weight of her troubles, swirling with a blend of mystery and vulnerability. In a single heartbeat, it felt like my world collided with hers. That gorgeous blush rose to her cheeks before she turned away and I couldn’t ignore her allure. I got Zane’s attention and signaled for him to get her another drink.

Now, a smile plays at the corner of my lips as I watch Zane give it to her. From her reaction when she caught me looking at her, I’m not expecting her to acknowledge me, so when she turns and raises her glass with a smile, I cock my head and grin. Lifting my own glass, I bring it to my lips, watching as her eyes follow the motion.

Even from across the bar I can see the pretty pink hue tinting her cheeks and I wonder if it's from the warmth of the alcohol or a natural reaction to my attention. In fact, I’m dying to find out.

She turns away again, and I contemplate whether I should approach.

I know she’s a lot younger than me, but that knowledge doesn’t bother me as much as it probably should. There’s something about her, some type of connection lingering between the two of us. I can’t deny the spark of intrigue, the magnetic pull that’s urging me to go speak to her. She’s become more than a simple fascination; she’s an enigma, and I want to unravel all of her mysteries.

I shouldn’t. I know I shouldn’t.

But as I tip back my glass and finish off my drink, I make my decision.

With a confident stride, I cut across the crowded room, closing the distance between us. She's still facing the bar and doesn't see me coming, but that doesn't stop me from taking the empty stool next to her. The movement gets her attention and I lean in to introduce myself.

“Hey, beautiful. I'm Deacon.”

“Leila,” she says with a soft smile. “Thanks for the drink.”

She's even more beautiful up close.

Her pretty eyes sparkle in the dim light and there's not an ounce of makeup on her face. Unusual, but appealing. She’s a natural beauty.

“My pleasure,” I tell her, biting back a groan when I catch the scent of whatever perfume she's wearing. Jasmine and champagne. So fucking luscious.
