“No, he shouldn’t have, but kids making fun of you for something is not a reason to hit them, Cade. Tell me you understand that.”

Reluctantly and slowly, he says, “Yeah, I get that.”

“And so, what have I taught you about this kind of thing?”

He releases another long breath. “That I have to own my actions.” The way he says those words is as if he’s pulling them out of himself while kicking and screaming.

“So, you’ll go to school today, and you’ll own your actions. We don’t run from the things we do. We stand and face them. And son, when your mother and I get home, we’ll all be having a long talk about this.”

He groans.

“I love you, Cade. Now, put Holly back on.”

I hold up my finger at Colt to indicate I’ll be another moment.

“Thanks, King,” Holly says once she’s back on the call.

“Let me know if you have any more issues.”

“Oh, don’t you worry, I will. I was not made to be a mother, so rest assured that you and Mum are on speed dial this weekend.”

I smile. My first one of the day.

We end the call and I stalk back inside to deal with this guy. When he sees me coming, he visibly flinches and appears to try to push himself harder against the wall.

Not in any mood to continue fucking about, I pick up the axe and swing it at the wall, lodging it there right next to his head. Barely registering his scream, I demand, “Where the fuck is Roark?”

His mouth opens and a list of locations tumble out, like he can’t get them out of himself fast enough.

Once he’s finished, I eye Colt. “You get all that or do we need him to repeat any of it?”

“I’ve got it all,” Colt says.

Turning back to the asshole, I pull my axe from the wall. “This would have been a fuckuva lot fucking easier if you’d just said all that to begin with. If we ever cross paths again, you won’t be as lucky as you are today.”

CHAPTER TWO

LILY

Friday, 10 a.m.

Me:

I’ve just landed in Brisbane. How’s everything going?

I almost trip over my own feet as I tap out the text to my husband and when the man behind me shoves past with a grunt at the fact I’ve slowed him down, I only just refrain from giving him the finger. My mother would be proud that I kept that finger to myself. Seriously, though. Ugh.

It’s King I’m cross with the most, though. Not that man. It’s our ten-year wedding anniversary today and we were supposed to be in Port Douglas right now celebrating. I’ve been planning it for six months because planning anything around King’s schedule is difficult. I thought all was set, and then he came home on Tuesday and told me we needed a change of plans due to club stuff.

The fight we had was one of our worst to date. I always rearrange everything for club stuff, and I don’t begrudge it. I married him knowing the club comes first. But lately, he’s been away a lot for work, and we haven’t been connecting enough. We needed this weekend away. Or maybe it was just me who needed it. Either way, I was pissed off and he knew it.

“Lily!”

I look up and find Madison waving madly at me.

“You made it!” she says when she reaches me and pulls me in for a hug.

I wrap my arms around her and hold on tightly for a long moment before letting her go. “I made it.” I smile. “And my kids are all still breathing, which is a miracle.”
