“Eat it, bitch.” Big Tammy pinches my nose, and I hold my breath for as long as I can…

I pretend I’m underwater, and?—

I can’t help it. I gulp in air, and Big Tammy shoves the cockroach into my mouth.

My entire body breaks into shivers. It’s still alive. I can feel its antennae, its wings, its legs, moving around on my tongue.

Without even thinking, I reflexively bite down on it to stop it from moving. That does the trick, but now its gooey cockroach innards are floating around my mouth. There’s no way in hell I can swallow this. I gaze up at Big Tammy, hoping she’ll find an ounce of humanity in herself.

“Swallow, bitch. Swallow it.”

So much for that ounce of humanity.

I wriggle my arms, trying to break free, but they’re all bigger and stronger than I am. Big Tammy digs the tines of her fork into my cheek.

In the end I have no choice.

I swallow it.

It doesn’t go down easy, and I gag, heaving.

Big Tammy scowls at me. “Don’t you fucking barf, bitch. Or I’ll shove ten more down your throat.”

I swallow. Swallow again. Swallow, swallow, swallow… Until it stays down.

At least, I think I got it all. Is it my imagination, or do I still feel a leg or two twitching on my tongue?

Once they’ve had their fun for the day, the girls let me go. I book it to my bed and throw myself under the covers. I stick my tongue out and scrape my fingernails over it, trying to remove any remnants of the disgusting creature that was in my mouth.

I scrape and scrape. Finally, when I feel like I’ve taken several layers off my tongue, I relent, laying my head down on my under-stuffed pillow.

I peer out from behind my blankets. No one is there. Big Tammy and her gang have turned their attention away from me for now.

But tomorrow they’ll be up to something else. I’m their favorite target. They love picking on the smallest of the bunch.

The others don’t try to help me. Why should they get involved? Big Tammy will just turn on them. I try not to begrudge them for it.

I cry myself to sleep again, sniffling into my pillow.

CHAPTER FOUR

I jerk upward.

For a moment, I’m not sure where I am. Where’s my window, with the sun streaming in?

Only hard concrete walls greet me.

Right.

I’m in this stark chamber being held against my will.

And I?—

The door opens once more and the stranger walks in.

I brush my arms against the goosebumps that erupt. Try to slow my racing heart. But the fear has lessened a bit—but only a bit—since the last time he came.

He didn’t hurt me then.
