Dangling in the air like that infuriated her, and she hissed and kicked at him like a little hellcat. Somehow, she got a few more hits in that actually did some damage, but he couldn’t be bothered to care.

Not when this creature before him was fighting him like she really, truly planned to force him to kill her instead of dragging her ass back home where she belonged.

Why was that? What was she so afraid of?

Because that’s what he saw in her eyes.

Fear.

Terror.

But not of him.

She’d been afraid of him at first, but once he’d sworn to protect her, that fear had disappeared.

It was strange that she didn’t seem to care if he was planning to tie her up and whip her for the rest of eternity or not. No, there was something else she found far more terrifying than him and whatever – or whoever – it was, was in hell.

What had they missed?

He hissed in a breath of irritation when she summoned a true scythe and used it to cut into his side again, right where she’d stabbed him before.

It was very annoying she had all these weapons stashed away.

Dropping her was involuntary. It wasn’t something he could avoid when her scythe suddenly became double-ended. Not if he wanted to keep his head on his shoulders.

She whipped that heavy thing around her like it was nothing and tucked her wings in close to her body.

Those should have warned him.

Wings were a rarity on all demons, not just lilim, and her wings were massive considering the size of her body. They looked a lot like his, other than the fact that her scales were black and purple, not black and gold.

Instead of trying to strike him again, she ran up the steps of the cathedral toward the doors, the sour taste of desperation coming off of her in waves.

Asmodeus had to admire her tenacity, but he wasn’t going to let her win.

Releasing his wings, he shifted through time and space until he stood before those doors, spreading his wings wide and nearly making her fall. Her eyes were round with shock, and those red flames disappeared to show him that unusual violet again.

She stared at his wings like she’d been expecting something different, and he couldn’t help his feral grin.

“Expecting something a bit more…angelic?”

The way she looked at him said, yes, she had. Then something unexpected flickered through her scent.

Lust.

He tilted his head and studied her, wondering why that turned her on.

She’d smelled like this before, when she’d been studying the outline of his dick in his pants, but she’d squashed it so fast he hadn’t been sure he’d scented it at all.

That was the second time she’d impressed him. Especially considering what she was.

The first time had been the way she’d handled that human.

Not only had she ensured she had consent, but he didn’t think she would have fed off of him more than necessary – more than he could easily give her. Then she’d sent him on his way without hurting him or stealing his memories.

All she’d used was that sinful voice and a tiny drop of magic.

She’d protected him – had affection for him. Even went as far as using her power of persuasion to keep him out of the subway on a full moon to ensure other paranormals didn’t hunt him.
