She let out a small squeak as he rested his back against the wall and pulled her more firmly between his legs. He feared she would protest, but then she settled back into him.

Now he just had to stay calm as he heard what had happened.

* * *

At first, Kate wondered what everyone would think about her sitting between Isaac’s legs. Her face heated with shame at her weaknesses—first being hurt several times in as many weeks, and now letting Isaac support her.

Looking around the room she wondered how many eyes were on her. To her surprise, there were none. All eyes were on Jack as he stood at the end of the long room, prepared to address the group, yet she couldn’t help but notice the couples.

Reece had Isabella tucked into his side, Connor had his arms around Rowena, Jo and Simon were holding hands as they leaned against a wall and the biggest surprise of all was her brother. Damon was sitting on the floor against a wall, and Morgana was sitting between his legs just like Kate was between Isaac’s.

Her friends were already couples; will they assume she and Isaac are as well when they were merely sleeping together? She could set people straight on their relationship later.

Jack cleared his throat and all conversation in the room ceased. “Before Isabella and Kate explain what happened at the restaurant, I’d like to bring something else to your attention.” Jack paused as Frank and Ben tended to do—maybe it was an FBI thing, to make sure people were listening. Then he looked at Kate’s mom, and her mom nodded. Kate had no idea what that was about.

“Some of you may have heard that Fiona has had a recurring vision of Kate lying unconscious in a white room. I’ve also had some visions lately. In one, I was with several of you.”

Now she knew why her mom nodded at Jack. Kate just hoped she wasn’t in one of Jack’s visions as well. She wasn’t sure she’d be able to handle any more protectiveness.

“The recurring vision I’ve been having lately involves Meredith, Reece, and Morgana,” Jack continued. “We’re trapped in some kind of cave.”

“Do you have an idea when it might happen?” Reece asked.

“Unfortunately, I didn’t get a calendar invite,” Jack said, and there were a few chuckles in the room. It wasn’t often that Kate heard Jack crack a joke. “But… the visions I’ve had in the last two years have come to fruition within one to two months of when I first get them.”

“Jack. You’ll let us know more as soon as you know,” Damon said. So like her brother, Kate knew he was making a statement and not asking a question.

Jack nodded. “Of course… Now, Isabella, would you mind walking us through what happened tonight?”

Kate listened but didn’t interject as Isabella covered everything. She couldn’t have known exactly what had happened to Kate once she was alone, but Isabella got the gist of it.

When Isabella was finished and had answered a few questions from the group, Jack turned to Kate. “Anything to add?”

Kate shook her head.

“Okay, then I’d like to—” Jack stopped talking when Frank and Ben arrived in the middle of the room.

Both men had been like fathers to Kate since her own father had died, but now, as she looked at the expressions on their faces and their suits, there wasn’t anything fatherly about them. They were in pure FBI mode.

Jack asked Frank and Ben to fill the group in on what they’d learned.

Like Jack had, Frank walked to the end of the room and waited until all eyes were on him.

“Ben and I just came from an emergency meeting and learned that the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services has declared a nationwide public health emergency. The magics in the organization that we spoke with believe Maverick has created some kind of enslaving spell that is quickly being spread by his minions. There have been reports from each state, as well as from Canadian cities closest to our borders.”

“That sounds like exactly what Isabella explained she and Kate witnessed,” Jack interjected. “What do the non-magics believe it is?”

“They think it’s a virus and are shutting down all public facilities, along with ordering schools to close and hospitals to be on lockdown. We’ve already seen that Maverick can only control magics, but since the non-magic authorities are not aware of this, it is creating a panic unlike anything we’ve ever seen before.”

Ben stepped forward. “Jack. Are you and your council any closer to finding a way to extract the evil from Maverick?”

“We’re bouncing some theories around right now.” Jack turned to Ben’s daughter. “Sam? You care to comment?”

Sam didn’t step forward, but she didn’t cower either. “Not yet. I need more time before I come to you with a plan. A few days to a week maybe.”

Frank smiled at his niece before turning back to Jack. “Then you’ve got about a week to figure out what to do with the sword and how to close the box.”

Kate felt Isaac stiffen against her back.
