“My reputation was shot among other swordsmiths, but when I went out on my own, with Henry’s blessing, that client helped spread the word about the quality of my work. It took time, but now my business is thriving.”

“I always wondered where that chip on your shoulder came from,” Isaac teased as he closed the gap between them and nipped at her lower lip.

Kate realized that she could take the teasing from Isaac and didn’t feel like she needed to defend herself. “Ha-ha, funny man,” she said as she pushed up into a sitting position. “I’m hungry. What time is it?”

Isaac leaned over the bed and glanced at the phone on the floor. “I guess we missed dinner. It’s already seven.”

“What do you—” Before she could even ask what Isaac felt like having, he had retrieved the two plates they conjured a couple of days ago and placed huge sandwiches on them, passing one to her.

In one of their many conjuring sessions, they decided to reuse as many items as they could, like plates and water bottles, since they couldn’t make anything disappear. Death by falling stacks of plates and cups was not her preferred way to go.

“Thank you. It looks delicious. Turkey?”

“Yes. Happy Thanksgiving, baby,” he said softly as he bent toward her and kissed her briefly before going back to his sandwich.

Kate had forgotten it was Thanksgiving. She sent a wish out into the universe that this would be the only holiday they would spend in the room.

“I think we’re going to need to conjure more condoms,” Kate with a grin, still straddling his legs. Her skin was flushed and she looked happy.

He copied her contagious grin. “I’ll get right on that.” Then he did, tossing her the new box he conjured.

Funny that sometimes all it took to be happy was a turkey sandwich and some good, hard sex. Isaac wished he could see Kate happy all the time. If they ever got out of this room, he would make her happiness his life’s mission.

Sated from both food and sex and as clean as they could get, they were back leaning against the headboard with the blankets pulled up into their laps.

Isaac heard Kate yawn and turned to her. “You ready for sleep?”

“No, I’m good. I think all the lying around just makes me feel tired. You know… that expending energy creates energy thing. Good thing we were a little active,” she teased.

He gave her shoulder a light shove with his. “Good thing. We’ll have to keep it up. So you don’t get tired and all.”

She laughed. “I’ll hold you to it.”

Because the lack of space in the room was a constant worry, they hadn’t created any more lanterns. But on the third day, Isaac had conjured a narrow nightstand, just big enough to hold the phone and charger and one of the lanterns.

It gave him enough light for what he had in mind. Thinking about what supplies he’d need for his idea, he decided against conjuring anything else that would need charging.

A sketchpad with a wood backing and a pencil appeared in his lap, then he conjured both items again. Since he was going to draw, he figured Kate might like to as well. He’d never seen any of her designs, but he had seen some of her work and knew what a talented artist she was.

“Oooh. We’re going to draw?” She clapped like a little girl and took one of the pads and a pencil.

“I thought I would draw your tattoo.”

Her mouth dropped open, her beautiful brown eyes round with surprise. “Really? You’re going to tattoo me when we get out of here?”

“Actually… I thought I could tattoo you while we’re here. I envision most of the design being in shades of black and gray, so it will be easy to conjure the ink.”

“What about your machine?”

He bumped her shoulder again. “No faith in me?” he said playfully but didn’t wait for an answer. “It isn’t a complicated machine and I’ve conjured one before. I conjure the needles too.” He shrugged. “Easier than dealing with suppliers, and I know what I’m getting.”

Kate rested her sketch pad in her lap and absently ran her fingers over it. He’d noticed she did that when she wanted to say something but wasn’t sure how.

“Are you wondering why now?”

“Yeah. What changed your mind? Besides… needing to do it because of what happened. It’s not like that’s affecting us in here.”
