Holding onto Damon’s arms he allowed himself to be lifted backward until he leaned against the tree. He felt as weak as a newborn.

A hand squeezed his shoulder. “You heard me,” Fiona said quietly, her voice filled with emotion.

Isaac turned and met her gaze, tears pooled in her eyes as she smiled softly. “You heard me,” Fiona repeated.

His brain slowly pieced everything together. “You… you were in my dream.”

“No,” she said with a watery laugh. “You were in my vision. We’ll explain it all tomorrow,” she said before patting his shoulder. Reaching up, she took Damon’s hand and he pulled her to her feet.

“Isaac.”

The hesitancy in Meredith’s voice had him tearing his gaze from Fiona and looking at her.

“You should look around and see where you are. I think it will come as a shock because it was to us.”

Isaac looked past Meredith and noticed a familiar park bench. That couldn’t be right.

“Help me up,” he said, holding his hand out to Meredith. She hesitated for only a moment before pulling him to his feet. When he tilted to the right, he reached out a hand for support.

“I don’t think standing is a good idea yet.” She conjured a folding chair and pushed him into it.

As much as he wanted to protest, he didn’t have the strength. Once more, he got a sense of what Kate must feel when he took control. Pushing the thoughts aside, he looked at the landscape in front of him.

The park bench was familiar because he could see it from his shop’s front window. The lampposts edging the park cast enough light for him to see the three Williams buildings across the street. If they were that close…

He shifted in the chair to scan the area to his left. A line of people stood on the sidewalk, evenly spaced apart like trinkets on a shelf. Each person held their hands in front of them, but their hands were empty. Many of them were talking and laughing, implying they weren’t Maverick’s zombies.

“What’s with them?” he asked Meredith, lifting his chin toward the line of people.

“They’re holding a spell to block non-magics from seeing in.” She crouched down in front of him like she was about to address a child. “Look, Isaac. I expect you’re weaker than you realize. Since Kate is almost healed, we’ll take you two to your apartment so you can rest. But before you go, I need you to see something before it’s destroyed. Everything else we can explain tomorrow when you and Kate are up to it.”

When Meredith stood and pointed, Isaac looked in the direction she indicated. His gaze landed on Kate first. Something settled in him when he saw her sitting up, talking to her mom.

Then he spotted what was above her head. “Holy fuck,” he muttered.

Floating about ten feet off the ground was the room, or what was left of it.

Isaac could see the bed and their stacked pile behind it, through the gaping hole where a wall had once been. Someone had lit the room’s interior, highlighting the cracks and buckles in the structure. Looking at it from the outside sent a shiver down his spine. The room was no longer a room at all, only a tiny, cramped space.

He turned his head from side to side to look at the outside of the walls and couldn’t understand what he was seeing. “Is the room in something?”

“We think so. Sam believes it’s in another dimension. We didn’t even know it was there. We… I’m so sorry, Isaac.”

Drawing his gaze away from the crumbled prison, he looked at Meredith, hating the guilt and sorrow he heard in her voice. “You got us out, that’s all that matters.”

She nodded. “Ready to get Kate?”

“Yes.” Looking back, he watched Jack walk around the room to face the hole in the front. His voice carried on the night air as he instructed half a dozen people to disappear all the items inside.

“Our drawings,” he said in a panic. They represented more than just the sketches they contained. They told a story of the time they’d fallen in love.

“Pardon?” Meredith asked. “You need something?”

“Yes. There are two sketchbooks in the room. Can you ask Jack to save them?”

“Sure, I’ll be right back.”

Isaac must have zoned out because it felt like only a moment later that Meredith was back, and she wasn’t alone. Reece helped Isaac to his feet just as Damon came over, cradling Kate in his arms. Isaac wished he could be the one carrying her.
