“I want toothpaste,” she declared, taking the tube out of the holder and the toothbrush Isaac had conjured for her months ago, even though she hadn’t stayed often. “I haven’t tried to use my magic yet, but I just need to taste the toothpaste in my mouth. Does that make sense?”

“It does.” He waved his hand toward the shower, using magic to turn on the water before grabbing his own toothbrush. Standing in front of the mirror, brushing their teeth together felt so domestic, something she would have run from before the room.

“Life before the room, and life after the room,” she said after she rinsed her mouth. “I think that’s how I’ll always think of our little adventure.”

“In the summer, we can go camping and conjure a portable toilet and a camping lantern. We can even have freeze-dried food.”

“Oh, you’re so funny, my lumberjack,” she said dryly as she gave him a shove. “Get in the shower.”

They were both laughing as they got in. Then Kate’s laughter turned to a groan as the water sluiced over her head and down her back. “Fuck. That’s the most amazing feeling ever.”

“Really? The most ever? I think that’s a dare.” With his hands on his hips, Isaac switched their positions. Standing under the spray, he got himself wet. Then he backed her up until her back was against the wall, with his hands flat against the glass on either side of her head. He lowered his head ever so slowly. Her breathing sped up in anticipation, waiting for the first touch of his lips. The kiss was slow and easy.

But she didn’t want slow and easy, and not because she wanted it to be impersonal like before. “Isaac, I need you. It feels like forever.” She went up on her toes and nipped his lower lip. “Please.”

“Please what? What do you want, Kate?”

His words were so much like the ones he’d uttered over six weeks ago in this very same shower. It was her words that were different this time. “Please make love to me, Isaac.”

He looked her in the eyes, and she couldn’t tear her gaze away from the love she saw there. He skimmed the back of his fingers over her chest and down her belly before slipping them between her legs.

His other hand wrapped around her waist and he tugged her close. Wet skin against wet skin. He kissed her as his finger slipped inside her. First one, and then two.

Keeping the kiss slow, his lips glided softly over hers. In direct contrast to his lips, his fingers moved faster and deeper, then his thumb circled her clit. His fingers took her higher and higher. And just when she thought she couldn’t take it anymore, her body tightened and her back arched against his arm that was holding her. She called out his name as her body lit up inside like a thousand suns and then burst with the pleasure that only Isaac could give her.

When she finally came back to earth, she opened her eyes to see him smiling. Reaching up, she cupped his cheek to pull his mouth back to hers, but he resisted. “What’s wrong? That was amazing, but I still want to make love to you.”

“We will, but not in the shower. Let’s wash off.”

Kate took a deep breath and let it out slowly, willing herself not to get angry or jump to a conclusion. “Isaac?”

“Hmm?” he mumbled as he grabbed the bodywash and the scrubby thing.

“Uh… why can’t we make love in the shower?”

Once he had a good lather on the scrubby thing, he began washing her shoulders and moving it down her arms, then onto her legs. “You can’t just go with the flow? You’re really going to make me mention it when we’re naked together?”

“Mention what?”

He sighed, but when he lifted his eyes, she saw amusement twinkling there. “Your mom. Her concerns about us in the shower and doing something to harm her grandchild?”

“Oh my God!” A laugh burst from her. “You’re right. No mentioning my mom when we’re naked. Finish up there, my lumberjack, and let’s get back to the bed.”

Isaac stopped Kate by wrapping his arm around and her and pulling her against him. “Are you sure you’re okay? Not light-headed?”

“I’m good.” She brushed her lips against his, then linked their fingers. “I promise.” They’d had a busy morning—eating, showering, making love in bed, showering again—and now flashing from his apartment to the hallway in the back of The Magic Plate. It was more activity than they’d done at once in a month.

Even with Kate’s reassurance that she was okay, there were too many unknowns for him not to worry. They’d been locked in a box for thirty-one days, and for twenty-three of those days they didn’t have their magic. If that wasn’t bad enough in and of itself, up until the night before, they hadn’t eaten for ten days, nine of which Kate was pregnant for.

He had two people to worry about now and he figured he had earned the right to worry, but he wouldn’t harp on it. For now.

Hands still linked, they walked into the restaurant and were assaulted by the noise of voices. A crowd had already gathered, but the restaurant looked like it always had. Not a single decoration adorned the room to signal the holiday. Christmas had been the day before, but Isaac would never forget this day—December twenty-sixth—and not because it was the day after Christmas.

Thoughts of holidays were pushed to the back of his mind when Kate was pulled from his arms into a hug. Everyone wanted to hug them, to reassure themselves that he and Kate were alright. He understood, but it added up to a lot of hugs. As far as he could tell, almost everyone from the family dinners was present, even the people that didn’t come every week. He guessed there were at least thirty people present.

To say it was overwhelming was putting it mildly. For over a month it had been only him and Kate. He wanted that back, even for a few days, to give them time to adjust. Only minus the room in another dimension.
